City Fans in the USA

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

City Fans in the USA

Postby Alioune DVToure » Sun Jan 03, 2010 5:01 pm

Could any of you please help me? I know that a few of you use this forum.

I'm in the USA at the minute staying with my girlfriend's parents in Philadelphia. I want to know if there's anywhere at all in the city centre where the derby-semi might be shown live. I've got my liveonlinefooty account ready just in case all else fails but I'd rather go to a bar. Fox Soccer Channel isn't listing the game so perhaps my laptop is the only option.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You'll need to find an establishment which carries Setanta sports channel.

A quick search on Setanta's venue finder gives these results in Philly.

Beware of Rag infestation, although they may go into hiding after today.

There's an Irish pub, as you walk down towards the Harbour where the battleship is docked.

I can't remember the street but it's along the road down to the harbour leading from the Independence Hall ( old building).

The bar even has 'blue moon' beer in it ( a new sort of Weizen beer - pretty crap actually ). They do bring Footy there.

I would try going to www.espn360.com . If it works, you are set to go. If not, send me a private message or something and I'll set you up with a password.

Yeah too bad many of the places don't show footy. But for american football, baseball, and basketball there are bars that go all out. Don't know if you guys have buffalo wild wings, (food is pretty crap though) but they have 3 gigantic screens with other big screens all around for showing sport.

There are a lot of good places. There's a huge market for watching American Football live in bars, even hundreds of miles from where the team is based.

The problem with foreign sports is that the few bars showing them frequently cover their costs by charging in to watch the game. It can be pricey enough ($20).

Thanks a lot for all the advice guys - I'll look into all the stuff you've given me. I actually noticed a "Setanta Shown Here" sticker in the bar I was in last night, 'The Dark Horse' on 2nd and Lombard - if they show it there that's probably where I'll head coz I already know where it is. Thanks again to everyone who's helped me out - it's very much appreciated.

Kyle's right, best deal at home is ESPN360, but any soccer pub worth it will have the Sentanta USA package.

I hope things work out for you. News hit late today here in the US that Setanta will no longer be showing Premiership games. It appears they may finally have run out of money. Or it could all be a load of B*ll*x. Hope there's still a Setanta channel around to watch come Wednesday.

Should be safe for the Carling Cup games in the US. The Premiership and the Champs league are off and it looks like fox is buying those packages but might take a week or two to sort, as of now the midweek games are still on, I will be crushed if I took off the whole day of work to watch this and am stuck with a crappy stream.

Does anyone have a link to the Setanta story?

I'm sure they'll be bought out by Fox or ESPN. Didn't ESPN buy the games Setanta had in the UK? Wasn't there talk of ESPN taking them over entirely, but ESPN balked at the idea?

As of right now, the CC games are still on the website, but no PL games listed.

If they do lose the PL games, surely they'll fold soon. Can't see too many people paying for a subscription without those games.

no, but as far as i know, the pubs are still showing setanta as of the last manchester derby...so i guess that was back in September..

if the bars/pubs website says they are showing them-they surely are.

I think ESPN bought Setanta.. but they may be keeping there name for a few years..

but i am loving the ESPN2 HD games every Saturday.. Football in HD is amazing.

More trouble for Setanta
by Ridge Mahoney, Tuesday, Jan 5, 2010 7:00 AM ET
[TV WATCH] Many listings of English Premier League matches and promotional ads for Champions League coverage has been dropped from the broadcast schedules on Setanta Sports North America's Web site amid speculation Setanta may be taken over by Fox Sports International or discontinued.

Setanta's dire financial condition called its future into question last year, yet still it purchased packages of EPL and Champions League matches bought by FSI, which runs Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Sports en Espanol in the USA. Setanta also lost an EPL property last year to ESPN, which airs early Saturday games and Monday matches that had been telecast by Setanta in past years, and had to broker for Champions' League rights with FSI, which wrested a three-year deal from the grasp of ESPN last spring.

Listings of Carling Cup games scheduled to air on Setanta Tuesday and Wednesday have not been changed, nor has a time slot for an Arsenal-Bolton match, but Setanta's schedule for Monday, which normally lists replays of EPL games shown during the weekend, is dotted by notations of TBC (to be confirmed). Its airing of taped match coverage as part of the Manchester United and Chelsea team programs has not been affected, and its FA Cup and Scottish Premier League listings are still up.

The head of Setanta's North American operations, Shane O'Rourke, sent out an e-mail Monday announcing the startup of a new company, Premium Sports, with him as its CEO after 14 years at Setanta.

"I am very proud of what we achieved with Setanta and it was very exciting to see our channels launched across North America and the Caribbean," said O'Rourke in the e-mail. "I will remember my time at Setanta fondly and will remember all the great people that made it all happen."

What happens with Setanta may not be known for several days, until its murky financial situation is cleared up.
