Man City announce biggest loss in English history
Big-spending Manchester City have reported mammoth annual losses of £92.6 million - a figure which represents the biggest annual loss in English football history.
Image
Khaldoon Al Mubarak: Still ready to buy.In fact, the figures run to May 31, 2009, and do not take into account last summer's transfer dealings in which over £100 million was invested by owner Sheikh Mansour. However, it does include the previous year, when City smashed the British transfer record to bring Brazilian superstar Robinho to the club for £32.5 million.
Another Brazilian, Jo, also arrived (although he has since joined Everton on loan), while Shay Given and Craig Bellamy were among a clutch of top-name players who joined 12 months ago.
City's chief financial and administration officer Graham Wallace said: ''The financial results reflect a period of rapid change at the club, the result of long-term planning and investment by the Board and our owners, to create a sustainable business in the future. We have always said that this transformation will take a number of years and these figures reflect that.''
On a normal business level, there have been areas of growth. Turnover increased by six per cent to £87 million, attendances rose to 42,890 from an average of 42,081 in the previous season, with ticketing revenues ahead by £1.8 million, mainly as a result of the extended UEFA Cup run. Television revenues also rose by 12% to £48.3 million, also as a result of UEFA Cup performance.
However, the figures represent a massive change at the club. While City's playing squad is the obvious example of money being poured in from Abu Dhabi, there have been other, less noticeable costs.Mark Hughes' demands to substantially improve the Carrington training ground were met. There were additional infrastructure costs, website and technology applications and staffing levels also went up.For Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, these were essential in the growth of what was a middle-ranking Premier League outfit to one, by their own admission, which is expected to secure a top four spot this season and win the title - for the first time since 1969 - next.

Figures reveal Sheikh Mansour has poured £395m into Manchester City
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan has invested £395m in Manchester City since buying the club in August 2008, it has been revealed. That huge and rapid expenditure is recorded in a document filed at Companies House on Christmas Eve, showing the cancellation of £305m which Mansour initially put into the club as loans. That includes some debt Mansour inherited when he took over the then stricken club from the former prime minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, and his expenditure since on players including Robinho, Craig Bellamy, Nigel de Jong, Shay Given, Wayne Bridge, Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Joleon Lescott, Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Touré and other investment in the infrastructure at Eastlands.
According to the document, all £305m of the loans from Mansour's Abu Dhabi United Group were cancelled in return for new shares in the club. Mansour's group also bought further shares for £89.6m, to finance City's hugely increased wage bill and other expenditure this season. City last night released figures from their official accounts for the year to 31 May 2009, which includes the first nine months of Mansour's ownership. The club recorded almost a tripling of the previous year's loss, to £92.6m, caused, it said in a statement, "primarily by increased playing staff costs". Mansour's City, like Roman Abramovich's Chelsea, are promising that overspending and losses on this scale will not continue indefinitely, and the club will ultimately become sustainable. However, City will not put a date on that target. The losses are certain to continue into this year, because following the rush of summer signings the wage bill will far exceed the £82.6m it was understood to have risen to by 31 May last year. Mansour's more recent £89.6m investment for shares will partly absorb this year's losses. The financial figures provide some more context to last month's sacking of the former manager Mark Hughes and his replacement by Roberto Mancini, which was widely criticised for being too quick, and clinical. Crucial to the aspiration of breaking even is to reach the increased money which accrues from finishing in the Premier League's top four and qualifying for the Champions League.
Graham Wallace, City's chief financial and administration officer, said the figures reflect "long-term planning and investment, to create a sustainable business in the future". He described the decision to convert Mansour's loan to shares as "in line with [the owner's] previously stated financial strategy", adding that City are "on a secure financial foundation that gives a tremendous platform to build from in future years".

Hart's wages on the up
MANCHESTER CITY are ready to hand keeper Joe Hart a double-your-money pay rise - despite the likelihood of him playing for another team again next season.
Hart is on loan at Birmingham for this campaign and has been in such impressive form that many are tipping him to gatecrash England's World Cup squad. City are adamant he remains a key man in Roberto Mancini's plans, despite Shay Given's role as Eastlands' undisputed first choice. And now they plan to back it up by boosting Hart's wage packet to around £50,000 a week, a rise that will bring him in line with other young stars like defender Micah Richards, 21. Birmingham want Hart, 22, back at St Andrew's again next term and his pay hike would see them having to stump up another £600,000 to get him. There is no question of Hart, who only signed a five-year deal 14 months ago, being allowed to leave on a permanent basis as he is viewed as the eventual long-term successor to 33-year-old Given. City reckon the youngster is worth more than £10million but have made positive noises about another loan, with the prospect of regular action for the England rookie. Brum boss Alex McLeish has a £40m war chest for the transfer window and again in the summer, while the club is also ready to relax its strict pay structure.

Roberto Mancini trying to tempt Manchester United old boy Juan Sebastian Veron to Eastlands
The ex-Manchester United midfielder is said to be mulling over a £130,000-a-week contract to play under Roberto Mancini, his former team-mate, at Eastlands. Veron, now captain of his hometown team Estudiantes in La Plata, played alongside Mancini at both Sampdoria and Lazio.
La Plata newspaper Hoy claims that the new City boss has directly approached Veron with the intriguing offer. It is reported that Veron initially dismissed the thought of returning to the Barclays Premier League, where he endured a disappointing six-year spell with United and later Chelsea, following a £28m move to Old Trafford in 2001. However, he has been asked to reconsider because the fee is so high that it is would pay for Estudiantes new stadium to be completed and is the equivalent of 10 years of operating losses for the Argentine club.
The 34-year-old last week retained the award for the South American Player of the Year, marking a stunning Indian Summer for Veron. After leading Estudiantes to glory in the Copa Libertadores in July, he was named the most valuable player in the tournament, which is South America's equivalent of the Champions League. Veron was also a fixture in Diego Maradona's limping march to next summer's World Cup finals and is expected to be in Argentina's starting XI at South Africa 2010, despite being a critic of the boss.

althou according to Sky the former Rag bastid has turned us down ...

Juan Sebastian Veron has revealed that he has snubbed an offer from Roberto Mancini to join Manchester City.
The 34-year-old former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder is enjoying a renaissance at Estudiantes and was crowned South American Player of the Year last year.A number of European clubs have looked to entice him back, and Veron has revealed that Mancini made him an offer. However, the Argentine star has snubbed the chance to link up with Mancini - who he played with at Sampdoria and Lazio - in order to remain with Estudiantes."It's not a fact of money. First of all is the family, and second, I have made a decision and I want to respect it, that is what I feel and Estudiantes is the place where I feel comfortable," said Veron. "If I would have accepted this offer I wouldn't have been true with my convictions, with myself and with the people." Veron's agent Miguel Pires went into detail about City's offer."Veron said to me that he received a phone call from Mancini and that he had offered him £7million and the same to Estudiantes for a one-year contract," he revealed. "In addition, that amount would have been duplicated if he would have continued at Manchester City during 2011."

Don't like that wag at all. I'd go as far as saying that if I were single and saw her on bar, I'd take a pass. Well maybe one night stand but that's it. 2/10.

Transfer B*ll*x from Blue Days : Vieira, Veron and the rest
6th January 2010 Following news of City’s interest in Patrick Vieira (age 33), comes the startling revelation we’ve been turned down in a bid for Juan Sebastian Veron (age 35!). Throw in Ivan Cordoba (age 33) and you get three players with a combined age of 101. How to make sense of this?

Like any new manager Roberto Mancini needs some leeway to bring in his own players to reach the targets he was given on his appointment. As we all know, the target is a top four finish this season so he’s looking at players who can come in and do a job immediately. None of these three could be considered long, or even medium, term signings.

He appears to be looking at players who he knows personally, and who know his methods. They are all veterans of trophy winning campaigns who may add a necessary bit of experience and familiarity with Mancini’s tactics. Whether they are also up to the rigours of a Premier League campaign is much more debateable.

Patrick Vieira
Vieira has looked well past his best in recent years, even if Arsene Wenger pointed out that he now seems to be fully fit for the first time in a long time. The French international would give additional height to our midfield, which is always useful in the Premier League, especially for defending set pieces. On the other hand a a pairing of Vieira and Barry would hardly be the most mobile.

Vieira’s arrival may be bad news for Vincent Kompany’s hopes of a midfield berth.

Ivan Cordoba
Although known as a centre-back, Ivan Cordoba is capable of playing right-back, which is hopefully the position Mancini has in mind. A 33-year-old 5′ 8″ centre-back hardly sounds like the kind of commanding presence we’re supposed to be looking for.

Juan Sebastian Veron
Veron may be enjoying a swansong back in Argentina, but he was to slow for the Premier League in his physical prime. If Mancini could have finally coaxed some winning performances out of him, then it would have been quite amusing, but I don’t think many City fans will be to disappointed at his decision to remain at Estudiantes.

With a fully fit squad to pick from, it’s questionable whether any of these elder statesmen are better than the players we already have.

A more interesting link has been Cristian Ansaldi, the 23-year-old Argentinian left back who impressed for Rubin Kazan in the Champions League. Mancini also mentioned Inter’s left-back Cristian Chivu, but his agent has said there’s “nothing to discuss”.

Maybe Chivu is Mancini’s first choice for a new left-back, and Ansaldi is next in line if the Inter man proves unobtainable.

It’s likely that major transfers will now need to go through Brian Marwood, and what his judgement is like in the transfer market is a big unknown.

City are known to have registered interest in the young and promising centre-backs Simon Kjaer and Neven Subotic. Mancini said Kjaer is unlikely to be signed at the moment, but Subotic is getting excellent reviews in the Bundesliga and may be more like the kind of big money signing we’d hope for.

One other player we’ve been strongly linked with is 19-year-old Victor Moses of Crystal Palace. He did well against us in the Carling Cup and is likely to be moving somewhere, but is he at the level we want?

Competition for our left flank is already intense with Bellamy, Petrov and Robinho fighting it out. If any of these leave, then a move for Benfica’s Angel di Maria would be a more exciting prospect.

Of the players linked so far, I’d take Ansaldi for left-back, and either Subotic or Kjaer for centre-back, with di Maria possibly arriving in the Summer.

10 players for Premier League Clubs to look at in the Transfer Window B*ll*x

1. Angel Di Maria
Interested: Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool
The young Argentine winger currently plays for Benfica, but has already publicly announced he wants a move to Old Trafford. Not the kind of comment Manchester City will enjoy, as they’ve been chasing the brilliant young lad for months now. Slightly girly name mind.

2. Carlton Cole
Interested: Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs
Make no bones about it there’s going to be a massive fire sale at Upton Park. Matthew Upson, Scott Parker, Rob Green and Mark Noble could be other irreplaceable names on the move, but former Chelsea striker Carlton Cole should bring in the most cash. We could see him slotting in remarkably well at Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea or even Manchester United. Hence he’ll probably end up somewhere like Sunderland or Hull.

3. Marouane Chamakh
Interested: Arsenal, Everton
The Bordeaux striker looks remarkably like Cristiano Ronaldo, and Arsene Wenger has been a long-term admirer. He’s Moroccan, he’s quick, but he’ll be expensive. Too expensive we think for Arsenal to invest. Definitely too expensive for Everton.

4. Patrick Vieira
Interested: Spurs, Arsenal, Manchester City
Jose Mourinho has said he’s definitely not selling, Arsene Wenger has said he’s definitely not buying. Cue Vieira’s comeback. If Arsenal do sign him, and he’s even half as influential as he used to be, we could actually see the Gunners pushing for the title.

5. Craig Bellamy
Interested: Spurs, Arsenal
Despite reports suggesting otherwise we’re 99% sure Craig will leave Manchester City in January. Harry Redknapp loves him, but surely he’s too similar a player to Robbie Keane to splash out on him. Unless, Keano is on his way out again.

6. Giampaolo Pazzini
Interested: Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea
The Italian press are already claiming that Chelsea have wrapped up a deal for the young Sampdoria striker, but Roberto Mancini could surely outbid them. He’s a big fan, and obviously has a fortune to spend. He'd be a great asset for any Premier League club.

7. Victor Moses
Interested: Liverpool, Fulham, Sunderland. Bolton
Crystal Palace are in such dire need of someone to buy Victor that they’re spreading stories about Barcelona being in a bidding war with Manchester United. Don’t believe the hype, but do believe that he’s a Premier League quality player. Expect him to go for £6m plus - just enough to keep Crystal Palace afloat until the end of 2010.

8. Scott Loach
Interested: Liverpool, Spurs, Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea
The England Under 21 keeper wants a Premier League move to try and push for a place in the World Cup squad. That might be pushing it, as bench warming will surely greet him in the top flight, but for clubs in need of a new keeper, Loach is the man to bid on this January. A price war is expected with Chelsea the current favourites to land the talented shot stopper.

9. Andre-Pierre Gignac
Interested: Arsenal
French? Striker? Expensive? If you can tick those three boxes you’ll be linked with a move to Arsenal this January. Andre-Pierre Gignac certainly does that, but we can’t see Wenger coughing up the reported £15m it will take to nick this frontman from Toulouse. Arsenal would surely be better off with a Craig Bellamy but Gignac may be the safer bet.

10. Sergio Agüero
Interested: Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City
The Athletico Madrid striker could be the big money man of the window. He certainly will not be cheap, with £25m plus expected to be the fee required for the 21-year-old Argentina striker. Sounds like Manchester City money to us.

On paper the club's balance sheet technically is, but that does not mean the club is in debt. A cash infusion would fix any debt issues.

Amusing Rags view B*ll*x
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the biggest ***t of them all, Vidic, Ronaldo or Tevez?
The foul weather has the UK in its icy grip; the kids are among the few who are counting themselves lucky with no schools to go to, but there's very good reason for Ferguson to be happy too, because United have been spared what would no doubt have been a torrid encounter with Manchester City in the first-leg of the Carling Cup semi-final due to the weather conditions.

So lady luck has once again smiled upon Ferguson, following the dreadful no-show against Leeds United and what turned out to be a hugely embarrassing defeat in last weekend's FA Cup tie, it remains to be seen if the manager's luck will hold out in the rearranged semi-finals.

Playing City is never rarely easy and of course the 'bitter blues' are still smarting following what they perceive to be an injustice in relation to the league match at Old Trafford earlier this season when Michael Owen scored the winner deep into added time in what was the most absorbing derby for many a long year as United ran out 4-3 winners.

Trophyless City are desperate to win any piece of silverware and most observers know how much winning this Carling Cup semi-final means to them; in last weekend's FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough, City's new manager Roberto Mancini sent out a weakened side in preparation for the big game with United.

City will now face United on January 19th in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final, and this mini hiatus has given everyone connected with Manchester United time to reflect on the dreadful events of last weekend.

Looking forward to the big game with City, Fergie had stated the kids would play - but following the no-show against Leeds, assistant manager Mike Phelan hinted those plans would be revised...it is very easy to understand that reasoning, because there was a very real prospect of United being effectively dumped out of two domestic cup competitions within the space of four days, but then the weather intervened and temporarily gave the champions what could be a stay of execution.

As far as the domestic Cup competitions are concerned, United's season could still be over by the time we reach the end of January. Ferguson was by all accounts very unhappy with what he described as a 'shocking' performance against Leeds; the fans' won't have been so shocked given the very up and down nature of the season so far.

Leeds United were always going to be up for it - they almost always are whenever they face United, traditionally, so are United, but at the weekend collectively they were extremely disappointing - and it was the senior players as well as the youngsters who let the side down.

Since that mind-numbing defeat, the future of Nemanja Vidic has been seriously brought into question. After the Leeds defeat Ferguson basically said he had no idea why the Serbian didn't play - there was no hint of covering up - clearly the United manager had every right to be upset with his most important central defender and what's more, it's not the first occasion that there has been question marks surrounding his ‘unavailability’ to pull on the red shirt this season.

Vidic's name has been the source of much media speculation linking with Real Madrid; United fans' have become used to this unwanted attention. While never going on record committing his future to United, Vidic has at least tried to dampen the speculation - this amidst talk that the Serbian wants a massive pay increase.

Whatever the real reason for Vidic's no shows this season, he could be playing a very dangerous game with the fans' and manager alike. Ferguson will not tolerate players’ who let him down - cross him and you pay the price. As far as the fans' are concerned, Vidic has become a cult hero after what was dodgy start at the club. However, the Serbian international is testing the fans' patience too, because clearly his manager was very upset with the player last weekend.

Many United a supporter turned on Ronaldo when he quite honestly and very publicly let it be known that he'd like to join Real Madrid, but at least Ronaldo was honest and importantly while he was still a United player, he desperately wanted to play and start in every game; at the time the media were speculating Real Madrid had told the player to effectively go on strike and refuse to play for United. It is totally justifiable for the fans' to ask if Vidic has initiated such a plan, but instead of going on strike, he is feigning injury.

The fans' also turned on another former player, Carlos Tevez, who is now proving his worth in spades at rivals Man City, the fact that he never stayed on at United is because the club chose to ignore his many pleas for a permanent contract; but like Ronaldo, he never let the club down.

Personally, I have no doubts about the three players mentioned; Vidic is the one who has let the club down most. Like his manager, and no doubting many other United fans, I'm livid with the Serbian.

Ronaldo and Tevez might well have engineered moves out of the club, but when asked, they always played. If Vidic is serious about staying at United and he wants that big pay increase, he is going about it the wrong way – at least he is, if he is feigning injury – although Ferguson stopped short of saying that, the fact that the manager didn’t even attempt to defend the Serbian last weekend speaks for itself.

Cristian Chivu's Agent Calms Talk Of A Switch From Inter To Manchester City
No discussions are underway, insists Victor Becali.

Manchester City's bid for Inter defender Cristian Chivu could be on the rocks after the Romanian's agent quashed rumours of a move.
City's winter window recruitment campaign has not got off to a great start after Estudiantes midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron turned down a move to Eastlands this week also.
The Inter Milan defender's agent, Victor Becali, insisted no discussions between City boss Roberto Mancini and Inter had taken place, but was swift to add that to be linked with a club such as the Citizens would be regarded as a compliment. Becali explained to TMW: "There are rumours that I have read in the newspapers. But in regards to my client, there is nothing to discuss.

"No one from the English club has contacted me, either directly or indirectly. Cristian is tied to Inter for the next two-and-a-half years, but any interest from another club always makes the player and his entourage proud." Chivu, if acquired, would supplement a rear-guard that has witnessed a complete overhaul in the past few years. During former manager Mark Hughes' tenure, centre back pairing Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure were bought in the summer, while Wayne Bridge is only a year into his City contract. The Romanian international, though, would provide competition for all three due to his versatility, and could slot into the first-team straight away due to Toure's involvement in the African Cup of Nations tournament staged in Angola.
