Vieira is EXACTLY the right type of player to buy at the moment......a cheap (Free) short term fix to get us through the next few months and hopefully into a CL position.

What does he bring to the table:

1) Experience of WINNING trophies

2) Winning mentality on and off the pitch.

3) Cover for injuries (including Barry who will soone ror later need a rest/operation in order to recover for the world cup....he's been carrying an injury for a couple of months now! Ireland also been struggling with injuries all season.

4) Cover for suspensions which always occur more int he second half of a season.

5) Cover for African Nations cup players allowing VK to play at centre half

For a free transfer that seems a damn fine deal to me!!

As for Veron......not keen on that one so glad he's said "No"

Vieira is a freebie is he? I didn't know that, but I suppose it makes small difference to us!

Veron - thank god he wanted to have nothing to do with us.

I still can't believe I just said that!

Vieira offers something different. With no Johnson for the rest of the season we have a gap in the squad. We have a punishing schedule for the next while and lots of players with a lot of milage this season.

Hamann definitely showed what a difference that bit of experience can make and the importance for the passing game in general. Yes, they're different players but Vieira is great at using the ball and there have been games where we could have done with options.

My only issue is that I haven't seen him play lately. But that's a job for Mancini.

Apparently so, Inter are just happy to save his wages between now and the end of his contract.

at the moment, we need Vinny to play in defence.
An Injury to Nige or Barry and we're short on midfielders. It makes perfect sense, as long as its a loan deal.

Exactly right!

Yup, AND we won't have to play Vinnie out of postition, he's our best, fit CB by some margin atm

I reckon if Vieira comes we could play a midfield diamond formation:

-------------------De Jong-------------------

--------Vieira------------------Barry--------

--------------------Ireland-------------------

Big fight though then for who plays up front.

I'd be concerned about the lack of pace/getting done down the wings with that midfield.

How do you think Chelsea manage? They play

-------------------Essien------------------

--------Ballack-------------Lampard-----

-------------------Deco-------------------

Or sometimes they switch things round and have Joe Cole, or Mikel in.

How come it's suddenly ok to fill the team with defensive midfielders when it was criminal to play more than one just a few weeks ago & to even be linked with signing one brought many of the people championing this signing to make comments like 'why the fuck do we need another defensive midfielder?' & 'clueless cunt' etc?

Could it be that it was a load of fucking shite such people were spouting then or is it a load of shite they're spouting now because one things for sure; it has to be one or the other.

From my point of view, I wouldn't have complained if we'd signed one then & I'm not complaining now. If he's fit enough he'll do ok.

Pacey full backs - fine when we're playing with Bridge and Zabba but I wouldn't be confident of playing Micah on the right and have him bomb off and not come back.

That said Mancini has stopped the reckless charging forward of our full backs. Probably a good shout on that midfield as we do try and retain possession more these days.

Patrick Vieira on verge of six-month loan move to Manchester City
Patrick Vieira is poised to complete a six-month loan move to Manchester City within 48 hours after Jose Mourinho admitted the midfielder had played his last game for Inter Milan.

City manager Roberto Mancini expects Vieira, 33, to wrap up his move in time to be considered for Monday's Premier League clash with Blackburn.

Talks are at an advanced stage over a deal that will earn Vieira, the former Arsenal captain, some £150,000 a week.

Vieira said: "Nothing has been signed so far, but it is going well."

Former Inter coach Mancini, who completed an £8 million transfer to take Vieira from Juventus to the San Siro in 2006, has denied reports in Argentina that he has made a £7 million move for the former Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron.

Vieira signed off at Inter by helping the Serie A champions to a 1-0 victory at Chievo yesterday, prompting coach Mourinho to praise his contribution at the club."I should give a special mention to Vieira, who certainly played his last game with us.

This was exactly my point. Whilst I do like Mancini and its not his fault what happened to hughes, if hughes was trying to sign veira and VERON and setting up so defensively hughes would have been crucified. Its double standards.

My issue is not with Veiras talents, its his promises of first team football which could mean he players regardless of form.

And the veron thing I cant bring myself to talk about. If Mancini has been on the phone to veron about PLAYING in our team then . . . . . . . .

Definitely not a holding midfielder.

Yeh may be a tough tackling ball winning midfielder but I wouldn't say his role is simply a defensive one. He's box to box. He's a leader which we sorely need. Captain?

Why do I have the feeling that you are constantly subtly comparing Hughes' tenure with Mancini's? We have a target to reach within the season's end and the only thing that counts now are results as we need to overcome some teams to secure that target. So far (even if it's admittedly early days still) Mancini's results can't be argued so if he reckons this is the way to go, I'm willing to let him do it.

Besides, the injury crisis that has hit our back line and midfield hhas clearly created space for another midfielder, considering that Vieira can play holding mid but also a more advanced role similar to box-to-box (even if he may lack a bit of pace to be a real box-to-box imho).
