What, if anything, do we need in January?
Is it a new player or two to give us fresh impetus? Is it a change in the current personnel, maybe a promotion for a couple of EDS lads? Is it a change in the management? Or don't we need to do much at all?
We have been largely poor since the defeat to West Ham. Certainly in the PL as 17 points from 12 game suggests. Qualifying as group winners in the CL has either masked our poor league form or been the root cause of it. Our away form in particular is rubbish. We look slow, ponderous, toothless and lack creativity. Is this the players, the system, the managers tactics or more likely a combination. We need to do something methinks as the league could well slip away from us if we are not careful. Of course, there is the League cup semi to look forward to and a hopeful date at Wembley and success there covers a multitude of sins.
I for one think a new striker is a must. As is a fullback. A no nonsense centre half wouldn't be the worse thing Santa could bring us either. Now, a lot of praise has been helped on the shoulders of young Maffeo. Surely the time has come to give him a go? I understand why Iheanacho has been slowly brought in, but again, he needs more game time now. He is fast, direct and scares the shit out of defenders. Let MDM go back to Argentina. I shudder at the thought of him in our defence again. We don't need a big name to replace him, just an honest centre half who can defend and doesn't get out muscled, out paced and can slot in.
A lot has been said about Pep and will he won't he come. Well, we won't know until the summer. I dare say there is a gentlemans agreement but it's worth jack shit until he has a scarf on in a press conference at the Etihad. Thus, we stick with Pellegrini. There is almost zero chance he will be sacked, especially whilewe are still in the CL and there or thereabouts in the PL.
Certainly, one thing we need to do in January, and that is start to play football with a bit of pace.
