Sterling, better on the right?

Sterling, better on the right?

Postby nottsblue » Fri Jan 01, 2016 10:04 am

I noticed against Leicester that Sterling switched to the right for a while and seemed much more at ease. He gets a shot off first time as he doesn't need to check back. Surely in the dippers false title season he was most effective wide right, so why do we persist in playing him on the left?

KDB is more two footed so he would adapt better to playing left side, or even Silva with KDB through the middle. Worth a punt I'd have thought.

I can understand trying him on the left - cut inside to get a shot away, but we've never done that with Navas. At the start of the season, he and Navas were providing real width, never coming off the touchline and it worked for 5 games. KDB drifts, so the balance changed and Sterling looks out of sorts on the left.

I'd give him some time on the right in every game and more so if a team has a slow left fullback. It was where he caused all the problems when he won the title for the dippers, so let's get him back there

When switched to the right at Leicester he seemed to play in a much more advanced role pretty much as a second striker. He was very effective linking up well with aguero particularly in the first half when he also played quite narrow at times. Certainly gives us options which is always good to have in your armoury.

No way should he stick to just one position. He should have freedom to float across the front as long as we can handle situations when he doesn't take up a defesive position when we don't have the ball. He is definitely at his best when threatening to get behind defences as with his back to goal he stuggles with lack of good touch and ball control and/or just loses it to some goon pushing through the back of him.

He certainly looks more comfortable on the right or through the middle. On the left he seems too indecisive & the more time he has to think about things the less likely the end result is what we want.

He needs to drift.

All the attacking mids need to drift. 3 on one side during an attack would terrorise a defence. Then the other side. Then 1. Then 2. Mix it up, be unpredictable.

How old is he, 20?Imagine this lad going at defences from all angles, shooting with either foot, at which he has improved massively, and capable of going either side. That is what he will achieve over the next two years if he keeps working, imo

I'm old school and like right and left footed players on the correct wing.
Sterling's pace frightens defenders to death. His movement is getting better too. With him and Kev with pace, Silva and Yaya will always make chances during 90 mins.

Even Brenda gave him a floating role at Klanfield so Pellers needs to start doing the same imo.

There is zero chance Sterling will become two-footed imo.

It's very old fashioned but he would be great playing off a big centre forward

Bit like David White playing off Quinn in early '90s. A young pacy winger turned into a decent forward.

You think players like that cost 50m.
Have you been asleep for about ten years and just woke up?

Sterling is an amazing player for a 21 year old.

And right on course to be world class in the next 5 years.

Already scored a couple with his left for us. Scored 14 with his right at the dippers and 7 with his left. Doesn't look confident on his left but he's already shown he's capable.

We didn't fork out 50 million. If we'd waited then what's to say other elite clubs in Europe wouldn't have made their move?
