The media are responsible for a lot of them though. Jamie Vardy is one this year, a couple of years ago it was Michu & you only have to string a couple of decent games together if you play for Arsenal, Liverpool or U****d & the media will turn you into an over night sensation .

Wilshire is a good shout. Never quite understood the love in for Dalglish either. Scoring 1 in 3 for the best team in the land at the time who won the league year after year is hardly world class material. Remember Lee Dixon commentating on his return to the dippers when asked about him said "Dalglish? The best ever wasn't he?" No, Lee, he fucking wasn't.

The answer I ALWAYS get is "did you see his goal against Arsenal?!" exactly! One fuckin thing his whole career!

To be fair, he was shit hot when he burst onto the scene in the early 90s, and right through to about 2004/5ish. So good, in fact, that I think he banked a load of good will that landed him numerous undeserved contract extensions in the late noughties. Wingers are a bit passé now but they were still all the rage back then and he was the best one around by far.

I don't know how old you are (I was born in 85), but as a kid he was the one player in particular who would frighten the shit out of me when we played them. So typical of 80s/90s City that we waved the philandering fuck ta-ta.

Also, Roberto Carlos is the best shout so far, so well done the poster above who named him. The ultimate pre-Youtube star of the highlight reel.

I was born in 85 also. Apart from the Arsenal goal what did he do that stands out in his career?

To be fair, you could pick out Maradona's similar goal against England in 86 and claim that people always cite that moment in his career. It doesn't mean he did nowt else. Giggs terrorised full-backs for a good decade and a bit.

Neither of us are old enough to know if Maradona is overrated or not. I could only name that run he did because that's all that is ever shown. I'm old enough to remember seeing Giggs and I think he was overrated. You look at players like Benarbia and they were only with City for such a short amount of time, yet I could name loads of memorable things he did on the pitch.

I don't think anyone is saying they were shit. The title is 'overrated'. Someone can be fairly good but still overrated.

Take Scholes for example. He couldn't head or tackle. But the media went on about him as if he was the complete or perfect player. He wasn't. Therefore he was overrated. He was a good player though.

On the contrary, I have clear recollections of a cokehead Maradona tearing it up at USA '94. He was absolutely quality.

RE: Maradona. Who could forget this?

This finish is quite something but the one-touch build-up play is exquisite.

I thought Giggs was pretty useless for the final 7-8 years of his career and managed to get by on past glories. In recent years, Adel Taarabt and Ricardo Quaresma have been bafflingly highly regarded on the back of absolutely cock all. So too Adnan Januzaj.

I you can't stomach seeing rags quite correctly being brought into question then maybe you're on the wrong forum matey;o)

I don't buy into the rag loving media hype that boasted Paul "Nistelroy shagged my wife senseless" Scholes as a top player who they made excuses for because "he can't tackle". What top central midfield player can't fuckin tackle for fucks sake?!!! That fact alone dismisses him from being a top player and the fact that he was a dirty, snuidey cunt who did some damage to a number of players with vicious, premeditated assaults (remember the one on Zabba in the semi-final at Wembley when the cunt tried to cut him in half and was sent off?)

So you are trying to get a who-hates-them-most, dick-measuring contest up and running?

As I said myself, Scholes was a horrible bastard on the pitch ('prime ballbag'). He was still an excellent footballer. Yaya can't tackler either (though he's not such a filthy bastard).

No dick measuring contest for me as I'd be embarrassed mate.

It's just a fact that the most hyped overated players in my lifetime (mid 50's now) are rags and I could reel off dozens of them at the drop of a hat.

Remember Norman Whiteside "the new George Best"?

Phil Jones "the new Duncan Edwards" (quoted directly by The Convicted Ticket Tout)

Nicky Butt (Pele quoted as the best player in the whole world cup a few years ago)

"Goal machine " Andy Cole (missed 10 times more than he scored and my granny could have scored in that team)

Stuart Pearson who got a shed load of England caps when top strikers like Trevor Francis couldn't get a look in.

If Paul "I feigned a mysterious medical condition when Nistelhorse was nailing my missus" Scholes was a top player then one of the top teams would have come in for him. They didn't because he really wasn't that good. It's a myth about their players and always has been. The only decent player thay had they sold in his prime (The Ladyboy) and the same will happen to their keeper soon enough for sure. Lampard was twice the player Scholes was and I'd have loved him playing for us in his prime.

If you remember a few years ago he was missing for a few months with an "unexplained issue". Taggart squirmed every time he was asked about it but basically Horseface was shagging his missus and that's why he was sold at the end of that season and Scholes miraculously was fit and healthy again.

All allegedly of course and it was kept well under wraps.........................
