"You have to raise your elbows to jump"

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

"You have to raise your elbows to jump"

Postby john@staustell » Wed Feb 03, 2016 7:39 am

No you bloody don't. It's just a blatant attempt to keep the opponent away from the ball, whilst hurting hm in the process.

Does anyone else remember playing and watching football? When you could jump without getting imaginary leverage from thin air? When any arm near the face was a foul? When the Mabbutt/Fashanu incident was serious?

Then slowly a disease crept into the game - called ex-player pundits.. These wise "you have to have PLAYED the game' (no you bloody don't by the way) experts slowly introduced this myth to protect their buddies from getting deserved red cards.

Now any incident like Defoe's 2 sending-off incidents last night is, without fail, greeted with 'you need to raise your elbows to get up in the air' by whichever clown was covering the match (don't know).

Also the infamous bogbrush over at the Swamp - around 2 sending off offences per game.

Why don't the authorities bury this myth and stamp out dangerous play for good?

Noticed also how they defended Defoe "because he is small" and actually laughed about it.

Shocking broadcasting

I wouldn't mind but the one that was given against Demi was actually a foul by Defoe again, he backed into him and raised his arm AGAIN, there was no jumping this time well apart from Defoe jumping on to the deck to buy the free.

Indeed you don't need to have played the game. I can't play a musical instrument but I know Berlioz kicks Holst's arse. in fact playing at a lower level might blind people to finer skills.

Defoe was disgusting and needs a lengthy ban. End of story.

Having 'played the game' at my own meagre level and also watched a lot of football afterwards, it's like a whole new world and you can actually see the whole picture, which you dont on the field.

When these clowns say 'you have to have played the game' it makes my blood boil.

It was worse in the past. Mabbutt's eye was fucked up. Remember Graeme Sharp wiping out somebody too. Was it Molby?
Those Defoe things were a gentle tickle in comparison.

Imagine the twist in the commentary if it was a City player that had raised their Elbow. Would have been 200 replays saying how disgusting it was and how they should be banned for 5 years.

We were lucky neither of them got seriously hurt.

I just started heading an imaginary ball in my office....

- I *did* use my elbows
- although not to jump higher, but was seemingly my natural inclination to generate neck power when scoring my imaginary goal (from my imaginary ball)

the i realised the blinds were only half closed.

Regardless of Defoe last night, all the players were embarassing. Really a stain on the game all the conning/gamesmanship that goes on.

Otamendi acting like he was shot
Fernandinho making sure to roll back onto the pitch and hold his head to waste time
That bald Sunderland player holding his head despite no contact

Hope Pep stops all play acting, somehow I doubt it. Busquets.

That last line is seriously wishful thinking, if anything it will likely increase under Pep.

First one you could argue he didn't mean it.
The second one he looks, sees him coming and planted his arm across his face.
I don't agree with all the fake rolling around that generally happened last night, but that was definitely deliberate.

The way I see it is this, yes there will be elevation of the arms when you're jumping but it's your responsibility to ensure you don't connect with the opponent with that arm, if you don't it's reckless and therefore deserves yellow.

In that Demichelis challenge last night Defoe actually ducks his head down whilst he's jumping so he's not actually trying to head it at all, he's trying to impede Demichelis.

Didn't he take it to another level? Last summer he will have asked them to get him Sterling!

I always apply the "what of it was ballotelli" benchmark, and if the decision would have been different then you know the whole thing is a fucking farce. So, what if it was ballotelli who'd made contact with his elbow, twice? I'd argue he'd not have done it twice as he'd have been sent of for the first.
