The problem with youth development is that PL teams do not have the time to bed them in. With the money at hand, and the prize at stake, clubs need to buy ready made players. You can look at the Rags at the moment and say they look like they're giving youth a chance but the reality is that they've been forced to play them due to injuries/bad acquisitions etc. Just like the Macheda's, Powell's, Jizz'ems of this world, they will be cast out, never to be seen again.

No club can stand still and it's only clubs who put a concerted effort into raising the standards of their youth set-up who will make it. Hopefully we're looking to do that right now. Time will tell.
In the words of my Old Man, "Life will never be the same without Man City, so get it in while you can".

Sunday Supplement contributor this past weekend, Patrick Barclay, making nearly the identical argument I have, calling the idea that the PL is hurting English talent for the national team "a myth," saying that players are facing the stiffest competition which elevates their game and could explain why we are seeing some quality English talent making it through.

Beefy, I gave an explanation why the argument that not getting time on the pitch in the PL if you are not ready isn't necessarily hurting youth development. If you play more lower quality youth in the league then you drop the quality of the league overall, because by being such a cut throat league with pressure to stay afloat, at least, you need to be mentally strong and talented to make it.

Maybe you aren't going to see players not good enough getting that many chances, but they do train with higher quality players than in some other leagues, and that is also valuable. The homegrown status reality still means it is in the interests of clubs to develop youth players they can utilise in their squads. We bought Sterling at such a high fee in many ways for this reason, and are investing in the CFA for this reason because of the costs players are going for when "ready made."
