Manchester United FEAR mega-rich neighbours City and Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement - Glazers' concerns for club's future revealed
By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 10:10 AM on 13th January 2010

Power vacuum: Sir Alex Ferguson is 68 and could retire soon leaving a big hole at Old Trafford

The Glazer family have been forced to reveal their fears for Manchester United's future, most notably Manchester City's financial might and the looming spectre of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
Both concerns are outlined in the 322-page offer document for the Glazers' new £500m bond issue, which is seeking to raise refinancing for the club's £700m debt.

Companies undertaking a bond issue are legally obliged to list potential risks attached to the offer. 15 pages of United's document contain 'risk factors' outlined for investors, and chief among them is the potential that the Ferguson's successor will be unable to match the phenomenal achievements of the 68-year-old Scot in his 23 years in Manchester.

United's owners admit to being 'highly dependent' on their present players and coaches, 'including our manager Sir Alex Ferguson' and add: 'Any successor to our manager may not be as successful as he has been.'
Page 17 of the document addresses United's worries about the stiff challenge expected to emerge from their mega-rich city neighbours.
It says: 'We face strong competition from other football clubs in England and Europe. In the Premier League, recent investment from wealthy team owners has led to teams with strong financial backing.'
Asset: Ji-sung Park is commercially important in the Korean market

The Glazers also admit that UEFA's new 'financial fair play' rules - which plan to punish clubs that accrue large debts or spend more than they earn - could mean United struggle to attract the game's leading stars to Old Trafford and could threaten the club's status at the top of the world game.
The document says: 'There is a risk that, in conjunction with increasing player salaries and transfer fees, the financial fair play initiative could limit our ability to acquire or retain top players and, therefore, adversely affect the performance of our first team.'
There is also a hint as to the future make-up of United's playing squad with a nod to the importance of exploiting world markets, such as the club has done in Korea following Ji-Sung Park's signing. There is an admittance that United may lose fans 'in certain countries or regions' should they not sign more players who hail from such places.
Men in power: Joel, Avram and Bryan Glazer, sons of owner Malcolm
United revealed this week that wages have risen to £121.1million and the document also admits that should last year's salary increase of £28.8m become higher in future years the club could become destabilised.

'Over the past three years, salaries for players and coaching staff have increased significantly. If there is a continued increase in the level of salaries paid to top players and coaching staff in general, we may be required to increase the salaries we pay to avoid losing key members of the playing and coaching staff. Further increases in salaries may adversely affect our results of operations.'

You know what. Im a bit bored of being told by City fans every year than United were sh*t scared of us.

When Frank and Sven came in, they were shit scared. Funnily enough they won the League and CL that year. We finished 9th.

Last year with the Arabs and Robinho they were once again sh*t scared. Yet we finish 10th and they win the league and were runners up in the CL

And now its that time of year again. With them 2nd in the league without having kicked a ball. We have won a few games against average sides and now they are running scared of us again.

The only thing official about this thread is that some people are more obsessed with United failing than City winning.

When we are winning league titles after league titles. Perhaps then we can talk about fear. Until then I'd prefer we kept our traps shut.

Amen.

We will only make ourselves laughing stock with all the mouthing off UNTIL we have actually won something.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Yeah mate but so far it has ALWAYS come back to haunt us. We were all giggling when Glazers took over and even then there were predictions of financial meltdown. Since then they have YET AGAIN won all the fookin titles under the sun.

Another problem, which I mentioned on similar thread the other day, rags will never go down financially. If Glazers can't finance them anymore, they will find a superwealthy buyer in a blink of an eye. Bit different to Ashley trying to find someone, anyone, to takeover Barcodes. So unfortunately, apart from maybe some short period when they can't financially compete for top players they will always be somewhere there. Even in 80's when they were generally shite (well nothing compared to what they are now), they were always buying top players for huge money. Take r*y k***e for example, Rags will tell you that he was cheap as chips when in fact I seem to recall it being highest transfer fee paid ever at the time.

I'd love us to be position to gloat and stick two fingers up to them one day but before that we will have to surpass them on the pitch.

This is something I've wondered about with our new ownership, and thought was definitely going to happen under Frank. Does anyone have any estimates on the amount of revenue Sun was worth to us in the Chinese market? Which nationalities would be targetable in this respect?

Whatever their income and global appeal I cant see any buyer taking on £700M debt (and rising unstoppably).

Administration for them, then a buyer can get it cheap from the administrator.

It just gets better.

No fool would take on that debt. Funny how Ashley was mentioned yet Newcastle look the far better option to a buyer than these cunts. Yoonited have drained every corner of the market possible, what else can they achieve financially? This is a bit different from years gone by. The manager is nearly dead(who the fuck would want to take that job on after all his success when they haven't got a pot to piss in?) I bet even 'the special one' is having second thoughts, thats if he had any at all?. Half a squad ready to retire with no youth(or money) coming through to replace them. I hope the cunts slowly rot.

Just to lighten things up a little...I found these snippets of history in the Gary James ""Manchester, A Football History" book...it amused me.

Circa 1903....A letter from the Newton Heath (rags) secretary to a journalist, Regarding the rags financial position then.
......"Previous to that time I always had the front door locked to keep out the bum bailiffs, and you would have had to knock at the front door 'til the devil fetched you before I should have shown myself. We have had the honour of having the gas cut off. To see half a pound of candles - eight pounds in weight - stuck in four ginger beer bottles, all alight and aglow, at the directors' meeting is immense".....

And just to show how generous our club was in those times...
...."During the previous season [about 1901/02] a bazaar was held in St James' Hall in the city centre with the aim of raising £1,000 to solve the Heathens [rags] financial worries, but it was not a major success despite strong support from leading Manchester MPs and rivals Manchester City. In fact it is known that several of the official patrons who had donated money and were recorded as key contributors were connected with the Blues. [several named]....Of these it is recorded that City gave £10 and Chapman [City Chairman] £1 1s."

It gets even funnier.....
11th January 1902...."At the Ashton Under Lyne County Court on Thursday afternoon Dr Bradley, barrister, instructed by Messrs Brett, Hamilton and Tarbolton, solicitors of manchester, applied to the judge on behalf of Mr WJ Healey of Salford for a compulsory winding up order against Newton Heath Football Club Co Ltd. There was no appearance to the petition." They were put into the hands of the recievers.
On 25th January....Their old ground at Bank Street Clayton was repossessed by a cattle dealer from Salford.

Funny how things go in cycles...innit?
I KNOW THAT YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU THINK I WROTE, BUT I AM NOT SURE YOU REALISE THAT WHAT YOU READ IS NOT WHAT I MEANT

It said on SSN the other day that with this refinancing thing they looking at doing it will take there debt to around £1.1 billion. That's alot of money for someone to put in before they even think about buying players etc. They don't seem I viable option for someone to buy.
