How was Summerbee's relationship with Best perceived at the time? Was there an element of resentment amongst some Blues like there is with Hart?

No, there wasn't. Everyone basically thought they were a couple of cool dudes.

But there was a vital difference, on matchdays their friendship went on hold, and they became enemies. There would never have been any of the shit Hart gets up to.

But, I suppose in fairness to modern day footballers, players then were much, much closer to the fans, in fact were just working blokes who had struck it lucky.

If fans had access to the technology available today then there would have been the same reactions.

You just cannot compare today with then.. (Obviously.)

Yeah I think the most criticism was that they were sometimes pissed up and couldn't always run very much, as opposed to any resentment. I well remember Summerbee's lesser efforts and 'repartee' with the stand

It's a common theme that they didn't have the riches of today etc (obviously) - but they were still stars and still paid a fuck site more than the average fella.

They were stars and peoples heroes, but they were still pretty normal, you would meet them in pubs and on the town. As I said, they acted like ordinary blokes taking advantage of their fame and money.

With all due respect, a PL derby with both sides playing for the title is a different game altogether to a match played on a school field.

To be fair to Joe, he does get visibly annoyed and upset when either we lose or he has had a poor game in other matches, the CL especially. But like Mase and Patrick say, leave the old pals act for the after match drinks or the meal at the others house the next day. No good can come of Joe and Shrek giving it the old pals act straight after the final whistle. You didn't see Shrek laughing after the 6-1 after all

As soon as Pep was announced as manager Harts days were always numbered. Given our obvious weaknesses in other parts of the field I did expect him to survive a season until a proper replacement was either ready or available or in the unlikely event that he suddenly dramatically improved his distribution.

When we were being found out in the CL it was always the top teams who pressed our lazy arsed midfielders who inturn passed the ball backward for it to be inevitably hooded back into the the middle of the park by Hart for the whole process to either start again or be hit on the break.

Pep used it plenty times against us, as did Klopp whilst at Dortmund who used the exact same tactics in the drubbing Liverpool gave us last year.

He's a good shot stopper but I have never placed him in the top 4 or 5 keepers in the Premiership. He got too comfortable with a lack of competition for his place. His mistakes were papered over because he was England's number 1. A terrible Euro's and the sudden realization that being England number anything means jack shit in terms of actual quality. Personally, I don't see that much difference between him and a fit Butland or Forster.

Where he goes next isn't really our concern as it won't be to one of our main title rivals. They already have better keepers than us. Everton or West Ham is probably his best hope. I wish him luck and thank him for the memories but he got lazy and complacent and his time at the top is over.

Would Hart stick around for a season or two? It would take a massive change in his attitude ... and I am extremely happy that we are seemingly witnessing the death of overblown player power. It's a shame that it comes at the expense of a long serving player, but then I guess it could only be that way.

Absolutely this. It's so bloody irritating to watch, but a complete no brainer for the opposition to set up to achieve this. We watched it fail too often back there exactly as you describe, well hoofed not hooded ;-), and we'll only be stronger with a keeper that can help us play out from that defensive position.

Edit: having said this, I'd keep him around to at least challenge for his place, if he wants. Not sure we have to offload first to then get the new guy in, let's have both for a while and see how it goes. Shay dropped down for Hart, now maybe it's Hart's time to suck it up for a while.
