Chumps League Elimination

Postby Piccsnumberoneblue » Fri Oct 28, 2016 9:42 pm

After we smashed BM at home I thought we had gone a long way to qualifying from our group. I always thought Celtic could be a problem with their record against English clubs. They're a poor side who won't get a point elsewhere in the competition.
But our result in Glasgow and the subsequent victory for the Germans there, have changed the complexion of the group. If we lose at home to Barcelona, which is hardly the most unlikely scenario, then we are staring elimination on the face.

It's a distinct possibility.

It would be a severe blow to our prestige and the media would have a field day.

Failing to qualify would be compounded by dropping down into the Europa, if that's what came about.

If we beat Celtic and gladbach at home I think we'll go through. Now losing to barca would could put us 3rd temporarily, but I think we'll get through.

If we beat Moenchengladbach and Celtic, we will be through. I think even a draw v the Germans will be enough.

Unless gladbach beat Celtic again I think we will get through without a worry anyway. I'm not stressed!

We play Gladbach away. If we lose there we will be out. ( unless we beat Barca at home)
They will smash Celtic in Germany this week

If we play like we did at Barca before Bravo's brain fart then we'll be fine.

Wouldn't put it past Celtic to get a point in Germany either.

Apart from the CL aspect, I think beating Barca would give us a tremendous psychological boost and re-ignite our Premier League form.

In effect, it could almost be like the start of a season.

I agree, Mikhail. If we beat that bunch of cheating wankers it'd give us a huge boost for the rest of the season. A draw and we should get through without too much concern.

Fucking hell, it's like a Morrissey gig in a bacon factory on here at the moment. Hold off the wrist slashing, we are very much alive.

I don't think it's really "wrist slashing" Socs, it's more a case of exploring the situation which, conceivably, could come about in the worst possible instances.

As has been stated earlier, some good results in the CL group could actually recharge our PL season.

Anything from Wednesday will be a bonus. Will have to win last two I think, neither of which is guaranteed the way we are playing.

Re CL elimination. First place in the group is highly unlikely. Even if we beat Barca it is unlikely to be more than four goals so if we finished level on points they have the head to head. Can't see Barca not getting a win at Celtic or at home to Gladbach either.

That leaves second place. Assume we beat Celtic at home, because quite frankly if we don't, we don't deserve to progress. I think we will avoid defeat at home to Barca and will just shade a win. Therefore a draw in Germany should be enough to seal second place.

Failing that and dropping into the EL would be disappointing. But if we lose or draw at home to Barca and Gladbach beat Celtic as is likely then we hope Barca beat the Germans whilst we batter Celtic. Should we require a result in Germany on the last match day I'd be confident on getting it.

All that said, I personally would not be bothered if we went out. It would mean we could focus on the PL. I know many fans and the club would see it as disaster though, not least for revenue streams and exposure

We aren't in Germany on the last match day. Fail to beat Barca and lose in Germany and the last game against Celtic is meaningless
