Which goalkeeper would you rather have??

I blame Shay more for the first goal than the 3rd. Should of came out than before the mess in the box that led to Scholes scoring. Shay doesn't have the height to come and claim crosses but he makes up for it in every other facet. I'd have Shay over Buffon this season but Shay was never to the level Buffon or Cech were at their best. As for VDS he's decent and always being incredibly over rated. Imho Reina is the best in the prem atm closely followed by Shay. Funnily enough 3 of the top 5 keepers in the world are spanish imho, Casillas, Reina and the underrated Valdes. Given imho is easily in the top 10 keepers in the world.

Hardly a word about all the good saves he made.

We're extremely lucky to have a keeper of the quality and ability of Given, plenty of teams have had money down the years and haven't had keepers half as good as him.

Buffon, the keeper we all know is gone. He's not the same since he got injured, he's been with Juve for years. He's won everything he wants to win, if he leaves it will be for money -- insane amounts of money. The hunger won't be there, just the desire for an obscene paycheck and an inflated ego. Given wanted out of Newcastle to have a chance of winning something, he was tired of waiting. He wanted to achieve something while he had the time. You can see how hard he's working for us, how much it means to him.

Given offers so much more. He's not going to get homesick, or fall out with the manager. He wants to win at least as much as anyone else on the team, maybe more. You want a keeper to drive the defence to better things, Shay is that man.

Quality quality post, but you're irish so it will probably be stricken from the record ;)

Well said. Its ridiculous to me that this is even being discussed but not surprising, which is sad.

Ronan the first 3 words of your post would have sufficed. The cheap shot about Ronk's Nationality was not needed i trust you know that.

Shut up Gillie you muppet ;)

Seriously though, it has been put to me that I support given so much because he comes from the same country... I was merely having the craic with Ronk over that.

This must be a slow day. Why Buffon and not Hart?

No wonder no-one will do a Poll, it's all about controversy!

OK, coming from a non-Irish, i have to say that I'm baffled by the critisism against Shay based upon the two last games. Before Christmas no one had one single bad word to say about him, then one or two posters started, and all of a sudden half the board seem to have changed their minds.

I still think Given is one hell of a keeper. I also think he's earned us plenty of points this season when we've been under pressure.
I do realize that crosses is his major weakness, but let's face it - all players have a weakness.

And what I really can't stand is this stupid idea that goalies should take care of anything within the 6 yard box. That's just as daft as saying that strikers should score from all crosses put in to the six yard box. I seriously doubt that VDS or any other goalkeeper in the prem would've been able to get on to that cross from Giggs on Wednesday. It was that fast and accurate.

Excellent post Mr N.

Its just his turn at the minute, plain and simple. Its even one thing saying you don't think he played well in a particular goal, but some actually now want him REPLACED!!

Wow. Just wow.
