I am happy that we got the 3pts tonight and got through what could have been a banana skin without too much trouble.
It is far too early to pass judgement on Vieira after only 1 game and we will only know when he has had time to acclimatise to city and the higher pace of the Prem.
Tonight, I thought he was well of the pace and like Doug has already postes...he was at times, a liability. He was often far too slow to the ball and was caught in possession too often. He still has class but only time will tell if he can get up to pace.
I KNOW THAT YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU THINK I WROTE, BUT I AM NOT SURE YOU REALISE THAT WHAT YOU READ IS NOT WHAT I MEANT

Exactly what I thought mate. Its funny, I was discussing something during the game probably standing up or lack of atmosphere and I said that people that tend to disagree with me about things I bet would say Veira was amazing.

In contrast, I thought de jong especially and barry had good games, despite several threads slagging the pair off in away games Ive not managed to see.

AG is a tosser maybe and a little biased maybe but a lot of the time he gets it right. Keeping Vieira on was all about getting him matchtime and nothing to do with his performance.

I'm with Grob on this one, I was pretty dismayed by the midfield formation tonight, its far too negative for at home. At times I saw the trio of Vieira, De Jong and Barry playing in a line about the width of the centre circle. It was proper headless chicken stuff at times and as said, when Vieira was up the pitch he had to look of a rabbit in the headlights, conceded possession quite a lot. I think game time will sort him out though.

Its clear Gareth Barry needs a rest, he's not played very well for a while now, and we need to take advantage of playing Patrick instead of him while he's fit. The only thing he is offering at the moment is versatility to drop back to left back to allow a tactical substitution.

I didn't think De Jong had his greatest game for us tonight but was pretty effective in closing down as usual. Overall, I think De Jong and Vieira would have sufficed. Would've been good to see two wingers on from the start tonight.

I don't think so mate, I think he is right. I don't agree with AG on individual decisions usually, but he is not daft enough to slate/big-up a player over 80-90 mins. It's enough to be a foll for 30 secs, but to be a fool over 90 is just, well, foolish!

He can do a good job if he has protection around him like tonight but without it he'll get humiliated. So long as we don't put him up against a quality midfield as part of a midfield 2 he should be ok. We beat the rags with Didi in the side & Vieira's still marginally quicker than him. As soon as he gets past the halfway line he's stranded though, no chance of getting back without cover.

Looked rusty to me, which is exactly what he is, matchtime will sort that, I saw enough in his performance to give me confidence he can do a job for us
I also agree that 3 defensive midfielders is a step to far - I have a feeling Mancini doesn't rate Ireland though

Reminded me a lot of Didi Hammann in the Sven season. He brought stability to the midfield and added a new dimension by playing the ball forward for a change. Allowed Barry to go forward on many ocassions which we have not see lately. Barry can still score the odd goal and with Paddy behind him, he will be more comfortable.
Not sure that we need 3 DM's especially at home. 2 can do that job. Question is which 2.
For me, it will be VP and Barry home and VP and NDJ away.

I'm holding no judgements on him as it was his debut.
Thought he lost the ball too much through trying silly turns etc, but Vieira is a true pro and will adjust just like Hamann did and just spray the ball about instead of thinking he's still a 21 year old athlete. He had moments which made me think, "yeah, good shit", but he wasn't as dominent in the air as I thought he would be. 6/10

could I be forgiven for thinking that his main contributions were some lovely (and some not so) "long balls"?
Never criticise a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes.
That way when you do criticise him you'll be a mile away.

I agree mate, they did. But because they're defensive players they get the abuse.

Vieira was excellent for a man who wasn't fit yet. He was clearly given 'game time' when he should've been pulled off as knackered! That will benefit us in the near future.

Anyone else notice his height changed the whole team profile, both in open and set play? We look more dominating.
