A share price rise is only worth anything if you sell some or all of those shares, which their owners are not doing. Otherwise it's just money on paper.
As for shirt sales, I read a good article that explained how this is a myth. A club gets cash up front from the shirt supplier for the contract to supply, which they've already had. After that, they get a small percentage of the price of each shirt sold (usually after reaching a set number of initial sales). This percentage for PL clubs ranges from 2% to about 7%. The only exception of note was the dippers latest deal, where they negotiated 20%. Not sure what the average rag shirt price worldwide would be, but even if it was £50 and they were at the higher end of the 2-7 percent range, that's a shit load of extra sales required to make up his wages!

Did not know this. They will have to be at rhe higher end though snd so that is still going to be a fair bit. I know of a fair few of the daft cnuts who were walking around with Sancho on the back who are now buying anorher shirt for Ronaldo. Proper stitch up

A quick calculation: at an average of £50 per shirt and a 7% cut to them, that's £3.50 per shirt. To make the £40m to cover his wages they'd have sell an EXTRA 11.5 MILLION shirts each season......assuming he's not taking a chunk of that extra income in image rights. Mind boggling, to say the least.

Thinking about it Ronaldo is a really bad move for the Rags.
Undisputed: he drains resources, blocks James/Greenwood development, blocks Cavani, no legs or desire to press, requires tactical changes when he plays, will want to play every match, Rags still have no midfielder who can control a game and setup the attackers.

Maybes:. OGS is undermined even further, ego clashes (highly likely), jealousy re salary and spotlight, etc...

Juve bought him to win the CL after losing two finals in 4 years. Since he joined they got knocked out in the last 16 twice and the last 8 once. They failed to win the league last year for the first time in yonks. Sure Ronaldo scored a hat full of goals but he made Juve worse as a team.
If he was still doing the business why would Juve let him go?

That is a lot of negatives for relatively few positives.
Here's hoping.

It depends on his payment structure. They may have put clauses in (like we do) to structure his income to be a small part wages, and the bulk bonuses. I don't know if top-earner parity clauses apply to bonuses, or if there will be clever work-arounds included his contract, but I honestly can't see them paying (at least) 3 players the reported 480k per week.

I would bet good money that his salary is predominantly a basic wage with a few bonuses on top rather than being bonus heavy.

Clubs also get almost all income from shirt lettering and numbering, though, after paying a royalty fee to the owner of the font (City used an Irish company called Sporting ID in the Umbro days for the Europa League/CL numbers, but not sure who we use now, nor whether it's the same designer/supplier for every competition), and possibly to the PL/UEFA for use of its logo on the badges and bottom of the numbers. That's where the money comes from for the club, not the shirt itself: hence the proliferation of unique fonts over the past decade, which has pretty much pushed DIY iron-on number kits out of the market. The Rags currently charge £15 a pop for this in their club shop.

But at £65 per shirt (their actual price) and £15 for badging, that's around £16 per shirt (allowing for a more-than-generous royalty fee of £3.55 for the badges, letters and numbers). To make up the £40m to cover his wages using this far more realistic formula, it's an extra 2.5 million shirts. Or names and numbers alone on 3.5 million shirts that would have been sold anyway, but without any names and numbers on. It's still a stretch to manage that, but still considerably more manageable.

The shirt sale thing also only works if people buy it from official channels. How many people abroad or even in the UK for that matter, buy cheap knock offs?

Thanks BM4610. was reading Mase's comment this morning ( still in home office ) making a cuppa ( Proper black tea not the tea bags dregs PG use) and wanted to write pretty much the same. With the slant of look at the trading of shares since the Announcement that City have screwed the rags one more time ( Tranny back in trafford locks).

A point i would stress is , when you talk about Shirt sales . it is only in the first world where people will buy "The original". far east and third world countries like the UK, the dad buys a copy (might be a good copy , but nevertheless a copy )

Makes the £11M or so we got for Harrison an even bigger joke. Harrison was by far the better player last season. I just don’t get how the rags keep on getting such inflated prices for their cast offs

James has 3 years left on his contract. I think Harrison only had 1, and it's unlikely he'd have been willing to sign an extension or been pushing for a first-team place.

Even so. Leeds had had him for a few years. Can only hope we have a sell on clause

And they paid a loan fee for each of those 3 seasons, the final of which (according to Sky Sports) included an option to buy, which Leeds decided to take up.

Gonna be interesting to see how OGS keeps them all happy. One thing pretty evident from the Wolves game is that they won't get away with playing the one cdm with the players they have. There's no way they'll leave Penandes and Pooba out and as they're paying him almost £400k pw, I think Tranny will be in more often than not. That leaves Cavani, Martial, Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho vying for one starting place.
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.
