Do you still enjoy the Premier League?

Postby PeterParker » Sat Jan 29, 2022 9:03 am

Not when City is playing, but watching other games?

Going back to the debate with the Farmers League last week, do you still enjoy watching "derbies" or just simple games? You get annoyed by the decisions/commentaries/quality/etc or it's the same for you like when we were shit?

Rarely watch other games these days. There is such a drop in quality when not watching us it is almist embarrassing
Derbies always have been a different thing and I doubt! any local or ex-pat will tell you that they enjoy these games. Its more of a laugh nowadays going to the swamp as we generally do well there and being in the boozer before and after is a great experience as you can tell we're City and ripping the piss out of coach loads from swindon and further is always a laugh

No, I'm less likely to watch a game not involving City than I was 6 or 7 years ago.

I think this is due to a mix of things. First, it's my own age, priorities, etc. (I don't know when the last time I went to a pub specifically to watch a football game was, but I guess it was around 2016, and I'm often in bed before mid-week kick-offs). Second, it's due to different cultures (when I lived in the UK, you could watch a game in the pub with friends, but when I moved to Bosnia & Herzegovina, this was difficult, because bar staff prioritized putting on whatever they felt like, which was normally whichever channel had the best/fastest teletext for their own betting slips), meaning that I grew out of watching games in bars, and started watching at home, where there are more distractions/other things to do if the game isn't up to par.

As for the football itself, I think the footage you get affects how you watch it, too. Different Joans seem to give more or fewer replays, and I find that frustrating, not knowing whether I'll be able to see something micro-analyzed, or even replayed to see whether what I thought I saw the first time round was indeed what I saw (perfect example: Armstrong's challenge on Laporte the other day - if it wasn't for the VAR check, sometimes you'll get 5 or 6 replays at different speeds from different angles, others nothing at all, and I think it's to do with which rights the broadcaster has bought from the PL).

Then there's VAR itself. The inconsistency of it (which competitions and grounds it's used in/at, how it's applied, basically everything about it) spoils the game for me - there's no spontaneous passion any more. I think the VAR decision(s) for Spurs in the CL match were what killed any fire left inside me for watching live football. Nowadays, when we score, I tend to check a website to confirm the goal's been given and not being subjected to a check before celebrating, because most platforms I watch on have a 2-3 minute delay.

Enjoy watching city games, and look forward to them.
But don't bother with a lot of the other games, there are better things to be doing.

I will watch any game tbh. The biggest issue for me on the premier League games is the shite commentary. Also, the boring singing from fans at all grounds. It's a the same drivel every game.

I might perhaps watch other games if they weren't at daft o'clock in the morning. I will get up or stay up for City and England in the finals of major tournaments and maybe other teams if I have got a connection, mates' teams etc. But mostly I can't be arsed ruining a night's sleep for "normal" football.

The commentary is shit. The Japanese commentary is even more shit and they don't even attempt to hide their allegiances (dippers and arsenal mostly with a bit of chelsea and muneage). It does, however, bring a smile to my face to hear the pain in their voices when we score. I normally listen to the match with music on, but rewind it to enjoy their misery at a break in play.

That depends on how you define the Premier League.
As a football competition between football teams on the pitch, it simply doesn't exist and hasn't for quite a number of years.
As it stands it's a competition at the top between global financial entities all with their individual agendas.
Effectively, at the Premier league level, football is well dead and buried at every level. So if this thread is trying infer that the Premier League and football are in any way related, they are sadly very very misguided.

The mantra that 'Football is global' is a myth. What is global, is the finance of football.
Our football institutions FiFA, UeFA, The FA and the Premier League PLC and the majority of clubs are now totally controlled by global financial entities all trying to maximise their profits. They are supported by the global media who themselves earn £Billions globally on the back of the myth of the existence of football as a sport.

FiFA and UeFA are currently battling each other regarding a 2yrs interval between World Cups. It would double FiFA's income from that competition whilst having a devastating impact on UeFA's income from their Euro comp. We are talking 'Portfolios' here not football.

Domestically, we should never forget Scudamore's retirement quote that; "IT IS A TRAGEDY FOR ENGLISH FOOTBALL THAT [Manchester] UNITED DON'T WIN THE PREMIER LEAGUE EVERY SEASON, BUT WE HAVE TO MAKE IT A COMPETITION DON'T WE" A tragedy for whom?
It certainly isn't a tragedy for anyone who doesn't follow the rags but a huge tragedy for those global entities that have stolen our game and have less chance of maximising their profits. Sort of tells us something...Doesn't it?

It has been estimated in some quarters that up to 70% of Premier League games are victims of some level of being fixed by some non football interest or other.
We saw and regularly criticised obvious ridiculous decisions given by refs to favour certain clubs. It became more and more important to protect the FA and Prem's first line of corrupt game fixing. So refs were ring fenced. Not allowed to comment. Not allowed to be questioned. Not allowed to be criticised under fear of being fined or banned. Then the perfect vehicle for institutionalised 'Omerta' was born with the setting up bY theFA and Prem of POGMOL. The FA and Prem creating a pretend distance between them and the refs..."Wasn't me Guv, they make the decisions"
Technology brought in to further remove increasing pressure on the refs with VAR...not really any need to comment on that institutional vehicle to control match results and legitimise match fixing.

Other entities that there is no space to add in this post but which have a huge effect on our game...The Asian gambling markets, agents, players, clubs, etc.

I am a City fan the rest are dead.

More or less the same here. If theres a game on I'll stick it on. Not really fussed about the result unless its rags or dippers or Chelsea when I'll cheer for the opposition.

But I still love the game of football

As a kid I’d watch any match on TV.

Now I couldn’t think of anything worse than watching any match that isn’t City. It’s not fun.

The only game of ours I've missed since god knows when was the Derby in November , that was only as we were travelling to tenerife for the wife's 50th birthday.

But I did take my android TV box in case our games mid week and following weekend weren't being shown in the bars.

I cannot remember last time. I watched MOTD in full, I record it and watch us mainly for comments after especially if something controversial or spectacularly happened. Or the rags got dicked proper then I will watch with pleasure.

Watching other prem games tends to be a bye product being in the pub Saturday evening or the 16:30 Sunday game which we leave at half time so I can drop my mate at train station as he lives in London during the week.

Scrolling down the list I notice we are paying a lot of lads aged 17 and 18 200-300k a year. Hardly any of these will ever play in the first team. Seems to me that a young lad would give his right arm to play for us and if we paid him 30k a year it would still be more than he would get in a regular job. That money could be better appropriated elsewhere

Yes. Love our games and will still watch the old other games to see how the PL try and keep its main subscribers in sight.
