Apparently Brighton told us to put up or shut up.

Not negotiating with us now, told us to meet their valuation or look elsewhere.

It’s a bit late into preseason to get this issue sorted. I hope we’ve prepared a plan b so that we can move quickly to close a deal

It’s fair enough. He is their player under a long term contract. They have their valuation of the player and what they are willing to accept. If a buying club doesn’t meet that figure then it’s tough on the buying club.

If that was us with Bernie for example and Barca say, offered way below our valuation then we wouldn’t accept the bid. We would say no. Presumably which is what happened with Ake and Chelsea.

If we want him then due to his contract situation, we either pay up or move on.

Which quite frankly is how it should be

Ironically it was Arsenal stumping 50m for Ben White that set a precedent by paying over the odd for an average player. No one moaned at the time, had it been us, imagine the uproar.

I agree with nottsblue on this.
They will have a very unhappy player on their hands but what can he do. He was happy to sign his contract and did not get a release clause put in it for whatever reason. Brighton took a punt on him, he was happy to get the opportunity, it is paying of and Brighton want their cut. I think they are right.

Doesn’t mean he’s coming but it does mean the Brighton manager feels his head isn’t in the right place post a transfer request. Can they risk being left with an unhappy player and no cash?

I think Brighton have a right to dig their heels in. Our club should have be able to assess how firm they are regarding asking price. Selling Zinchenko before they had a proper replacement lined up is a mistake. Using existing, non specialist LB defenders is a temporary bullshit option, exactly where we were last season with no specialist No9. Granted it kind of worked out because other players stepped up to score goals but how many did we miss? Out of our existing pack, Ake should be our left back.

Yes and no. By the sounds of what MC’s agent is leaking to the press, he signed for Brighton with the promise that if a “bigger” club comes in with a reasonable offer they would let him move on.

We’ve offered £30m and they bought him for £16m a year ago. Doubling your money in 12 months is fairly reasonable.

I think these players will realise soon that they need it in their actual contract and not just take the chairman’s word for it.

But he was happy to sign a long term contract on presumably a higher salary and with no release clause.

Sounds rather similar to Kanes situation last summer

He is Brightons player on a long term deal. They hold the best cards. It's up to us as the buying club to pay Brighton asking price, or certainly enough for them to sell. Not for us to pay our valuation and expect Brighton to sell.

Absolutely. But by the sounds of it he was told if a reasonable offer comes in then they will let him go. Doubling your money on someone in 12 months is pretty good.

It’s up to Brighton’s chairman, but I imagine if he digs his heals in then MC’s agent will think twice about working with Brighton again.

Like you say, it seems similar to Kane last season, except MC has handed in a transfer request. Their chairman can keep him and have a player that’s unhappy and will probably be sold for £20m in 12 months or take £30m now.

BBC -

Brighton have ended discussions with Manchester City over the sale of defender Marc Cucurella.

The Spain left-back, 24, handed in a transfer request last week amid interest from City.

The Seagulls had already rejected one bid from City and see £50m as the benchmark - the fee they sold defender Ben White to Arsenal for last summer.

Sources say it would take an exceptional offer to consider a sale as they regard Cucurella a better player.

Pep Guardiola's side are now exploring other options as the fee is deemed too high.

Hope we get him, after the dipper game it’s obvious to all we desperately need a LB, Cancelo was an embarrassment, so come on City get the job done

Maybe we’re actually going to use Josh more this season and that’s why we’re not going over a certain price for MC?

I’d be happy if that was the case, but from what Pep said the other day when he was asking (“Cancelo and Ake can play LB”) then I’m guessing he won’t be given much of a chance.
