Pisses me off when I hear comments like we're spoilt and getting like the red shit. I don't consider myself spoilt having a manager whose on north of £25M who has had the luxury of having his every whim given to him. Has he delivered fuck yes, but he's been able to have the best in every position. The test has been this year and he's failed massively. If we don't get chumps league, I'll be surprised if we don't show him the door, our owners are far from stupid, they trusted his judgement last summer when he convinced them to stick with his ageing squad. They definitely won't make the same mistake again
Who said he convinced them?
There has been a joint admission that they didn't act, that they thought they could get another year - but I don't believe for a minute the club would have spaffed 17 years of exceptional stewardship uip the wall and make a mistake like delaying investment in the squad, not least on on the say so of a manager whose contract was expiring - and not least when we're swimming in a massive PSR excess for several years now.
The club would not have delayed investment in the squad unless there was a good reason, and there are potentially a few obvious ones:
1: A potential concern about the implications of the PL charges
2: Top targets nervous about the implications of the charges for their career
3: General lack of quality for the positions we needed to fill
4: A reluctance to commit to certain personnell if Pep wasn't committed to staying
The club have not missed a step in 17 years, and I'm definitely giving them a pass on this one in terms of their MUST be good reasons why this was allowed to happen. And the fact we went pretty hard in January AFTER the case was underway and AFTER pep signed a 2 year extension, to me is are further clues that all parties (us and potential targets) were waiting to see which way the wind was blowing.
Sometimes 'shit just happens' and circumstances conspire in business to mean you can't do what you wanted at the time you wanted to - I'm fairly sure this is all that's happened here.
