There is alot of truth in these kind of things.

I used to work for wetherspoons in piccadilly gardens for about 3 years, every st georges day the police had written to our head office saying that flags and all the bits and bobs about celebrating being english should be kept to a absolute minimum. The bouncers was also told to refuse people wearing england shirts from my managers who had been told by head office.

Its not shite, Its quitely happening but its not making national news or papers because people would kick off big time but we wouldnt want that would we.

St Georges day is a day sadly that is used by the dregs of society to highlight the elements of British society that a tiny minority want to hold onto.

Everyone knows that Witherspoons is where the dregs of society drink and if there is ever going to be trouble that’s where to find it.

Sounds sensible advice to me.

The point of not wanting to make the papers is crap as well, read any of the newspapers which are favourites of middle class ex pats like yourself who want to read that society has gone to hell since your departure and every week there will be one story about banning Christmas or not being able to fly the flag. Normally when the authorities or people in question are given the right of reply you will find out is a media led frenzy over nothing.

Not sure what you are getting at with this but doesn't every event (for whatever) held around the world bring out the dregs? Or do you mean anyone that that enjoys ST Georges day is a dreg?

Exactly my thoughts, but like you say- its frightening how many get sucked into such shit !! .. If this was true, it would be all over the papers .If it is BNP propaganda, Im surprised they didnt do it before the elections. Personally , I think this is just something that has spread from facebook.

Even though this is clearly bogus, I find it quite amusing that people react to it and even consider it to be real.
It's the complete opposite in Holland. In about a week and a half my whole street and neighbourhood will be completely covered with orange flags, pennants, lion heads, you name it. Since about a month back almost all stores have campaigns where you get crazy orange hats, t-shirts or horns for free or for a reduced price if when buying something (or when saving enough bonus points). The days Holland are playing 75% of the population will be wearing orange. if you're in a pub 95%.

There's probably some truth to this. When England got knocked out by Portugal in 2006, a Spanish restaraunt was ransacked there. I remember getting a text about it after my graduation ceremony. Although the banning of wearing shirts will do little to affect the mentality behind this, it will possibly deter people from congregating.

Surely if it was to prevent offending 'non-Brits' (by which I assume the implied demographic is 'conservative Muslims'), then we'd be closing the pubs and banning drinking?
