Are we yet to bring in a true Marquee signing? Tevez was a free agent so I don't think he counts.

Noted moves for Kaka, Eto'o, Ronaldinho etc. None of them came. The "bottled it" tag was an absolute insult to AC Milan.

That's who I was hinting at in my previous post but it's a seperate debate.

I think you can make a reasonable argument for the role and Kenyon in particular. But i still think cook and marwood are doing ok. This could be their "hughes" season to put up or shut up and show their professionalism. Perhaps if this summer is a bust we would see a shake up but for me the signing of jinky was a nice coup and i expect a couple more of those this summer plus 2 seasoned creative midfield players. If they can land that then i don't think anyone can fault them for effort.

To be fair Milan did bottle it. They sold kaka for prollee 1/2 what we offered. They'd be buying adebayor or dzeko now with our cash if they accepted our offer or helped us work through personal terms with kaka in a professional manner.

I believe that.

Conmpletely disagree. They did bottle it.

We were offering a 9 figure sum for Kaka. Milan fans were unhappy at the thought of selling to City, a club probably a few of their fans had heard of.

They then sold him to Real Madrid for 40 million less.

But because it's Real Madrid it is deemed as acceptable, but at the end of the day they're 40 million out of pocket and sold him to a Champions League rival.

Cook was spot on. They bottled it.

Players like Kaka would consider it an absolute honour to play for Real Madrid and thusly requested the move.

Was there not a better term to use than "bottled"? I never thought he'd come to City.

Agree to an extent but I'd rate Cook's efforts so far as below par.

Aside from pulling off transfers, I'd really like him to cut out the verbal gaffs such as refering to us as the rags, twice, accusing one of the biggest clubs in the world of being 'bottle merchants', stating the Dunnie wouldn't sell shirts in Asia, generally making a laughing stock out of us whilst out on the piss in NY and just be a bit more classy and understanted. He even got the season wrong at the end of season awards.

He just winds me up and I've always felt he was the wrong man for ther job. Someone who quietly and effectively goes about his business and delivers results was / is what we need. Someone with a bit of class. Not a loud mouth who is full of piss and wind. I cringed when he embraced Tevez at the front door of COMS before the press conference. Get out of the way and out of the limelight for just one moment, FFS!!

Rant over. I think I've made my feelings on him clear.

Better word my arse, AC Milan and Berlusconi acted like cunts in the whole episode, so fuck them. If I was Cook I'd have used a stronger word than 'bottled' if I was flown over there, and wasn't fed or watered (if reports are to be believed) whilst they treat us like fucktards.

In my opinion City can offer something none of the other top clubs can offer. And no, I'm not talking about just wages here.

it's well documented we haven't won anything for 30+ years. Not a fucking sausage. Now this is an advantage for us.

"Why is this an advantage edge?"

Well I'll tell you cunts. It's an advantage because any player that joins us and is part of the first team to win something, they will go straight in the history books. Although we're still Manchester City, we're almost a new club, owned by HRH Sheikh Mansour.

Anyone who wins with us now will be remembered in 50 years time, when the Sheikh's son is running it. Similar to say Real Madrid they talk about Puskas and Di Stefano, they started the revolution at Real and are still talked about today.

Players who join us have a chance of this now. If you go to Real or Barcelona they've already won things consistently for a long time. Nobody will raise an eyebrow if you go Barca or Real and win something.

If you come to City and start winning things you will be recognised the world over and talked about for years, no fuck it, centuries to come.

I know that when/if City win their first trophy in my lifetime of watching them, it will be a significant part of my life. I will be telling my kids in 50 years time the team that first won the league with us (in my lifetime of watching them).

If I was Cook I'd be telling players this. Come to City and make history!

Don't also forget that Thaksin Shinawatra was good company on the Golf Course. Profound.

If we say that Cook and Khuldoon are the two men pulling the strings at City then we're looking at two very, very different personalities. The interview on the City site with Khuldoon was professional. He was very eloquent and poised yet very affable, too. And then we have Cook with his perma-grin and gaffe dropping. I too have never taken to him since day one. I find him smarmy, insincere and unable to do his job (dealing with Journalists) whilst he seems to prefer socialising with City Fans. That Press Conference to introduce Mancini buried him, IMHO. He looked terrified.

I know lots of Fans don't like their Chairman or Chief Exec - but I'm yet to hear anyone detail a similar story to the ones we have about Cook.

Wrong. We've won the League Championship under Keegan, the Thomas Cook trophy and the 3rd Division Play Off Final.

Thankfully you're not doing Garry Cook's job.

Very passionate. However, I think your logic is slightly flawed.

Firstly, are players of the current era that bothered about making history? Kaka wasn't, Buffon wasn't, Terry wasn't, Eto'o wasn't. If they were then why didn't they sign? Perhaps they and their people thought Cook was a pillock?

Secondly, are the players who 'made history' at Chelsea revered in the manner you describe here? Seriously. Will Drogba, Robben, Makalele be 'recognised the world over and talked about for years, no fuck it, centuries to come.'?? I'm not sure they will be. They will be at Chelsea but I don't think any of these players will be talked of in the same terms as Puskas and Di Stefano.

I get your point, I just don't think players think like that, at least very few do. I doubt making history at City is high on their agenda and if it was and if this is as big a selling point as you're suggesting, we'de have made a 'marque' signing by now, no? Unless the man trying to do these deals isn't up to it.....

The difference is that Chelsea have won things in recent times before Roman. Where as for us it's completely barren for 30+ years. it's beautiful in a way, it's just screaming for history to be made.

As for players not thinking like that, maybe it wasn't pointed out to them? If it was me doing the negotiations I'd have rammed it home.

Haha.

I disagree mate. I think words are very powerful. Jose Mourinho is testament to this.

Edge has a valid point. In fact, apart from the money...and some of our targets already have more than enough, our project is our only selling point and making history the best way of selling it.

We are in an unusual position at the moment, quite unlike any other club. We haven't won any major trophy for too many years, yet we have a bagful of cash and massive ambition. The very best players don't have to take any chances with their careers. Money apart we are not that attractive. Like it or lump it, we have money and hope.

I think Cook and marwood will struggle to get in those top guys and if they do land some big fish, they will have done very well indeed.

i agree with edge and those that agree with edge..

but i would say that as usual there is a lot of going to extremes to make a point here ( anti cook ? ).

If you listen carefully to what they sometimes say i think you will find that a number of of players.. Tevez springs to mind, who have said they are here because of the project and want to be part of the group that make City successful. I think Kompany has hinted at this.. DeJong and Bellemy.

ok so they are not your Kaka's.. but my question is would Kaka actually turn up in games, never mind get behind the cause.. and tbh i dont think anyone can be that confident he would.

What edge states is a very powerful arguement that City have.. ok some players wont see that or be interested.. they had Real Madrid posters on the wall as kids and that is their dream.. fair enough, but for me players that cant see the potential in City are not worth bothering about. Those that can see what is going on and can therefore see the romantic dream side of being the players that deliver that.. well they have something very real as a vision to buy into.

As for Cook and his prowess in negotiations.. i have no idea.. but what i would say is that when slagging him off have you got anyone else in mind that stands head and shoulders above anyone else in football as a role model of how to go about negotiations or be a CEO ? hmm.. tell me that.

I noticed Kenyon has been mentioned a few times as an alternative to Cook/Marwood. That's funny as IIRC he was seen as a real slimeball. Remember the Ashley Cole situation? Tapping up Sven whilst the England boss? He was seen by many parties as an embarrasment. I think it just comes with the territory for people in that kind of position, esp when you have to be aggressive to get what the club needs.

I'm assuming that City get diddled by many of the established old guard because at the moment it's easy to do so - we're the new upstarts. It's probably a more difficult situation than what Kenyon had at Chelsea because Chelsea were more established and therefore an easier package to sell. And the media operating 24/7 on rumours and sauces really doesn't help does it.

If Cook was that bad, he would've been booted out a while ago. He's lasted this long as the CEO so Khaldoon must see the value he adds to the club as a whole (Marwood too).
