Rooney would not have gone to the trouble of letting this story out just to get a better contract. The comments were just too damning about United's future for him to just happily sign away the rest of his career.
This is a total and utter stitch up, in the same way that the clubs lied to the fans about Ronaldo, and "not selling that lot a virus". Rooney will be sold in the summer, and in return he will appease the fans by signing a contract that appears to commit his long term future to the club to quieten down the natives.
In fact, I would be surprised if he even has signed a contract......it seems rather hastily put together given the legal wrangling over image rights etc, and given that there was no previous contract ready and on the table

Andy Cole taught us a good lesson. I'll give NQDP his props for this. He was one of the few dissenting voices when he signed. He scored a few goals for us then he FUCKED us over. I learnt a valuable lesson on this. No matter how fucking good they are, no rags.
I'm still not totally sold on Tevez and probably never will be. I'm just waiting for him to fuck us over.
Rooney. Rag granny shagging overrated wanker. He'd of been bad for our club purely because he's a rag granny shagging overrated wanker.
NO RAGS.
That's the way Dazby, make sure you don't grow to be "totally sold" on our stand out best player.
I love the work he is doing for us obviously and he is one of the nicest players I've ever seen for City but personally I remain somewhat wary what will happen with him in long term.
And before anyone has another go at me, I took the trouble to be there in Upton Park for his West Ham debut after seeing his dazzling skills in and for Argentine. I've always admired his skills (big difference to Rooney by the way) but I'd prefer us not to do any business with rags. Whether it's selling our better players to them (Coton), loaning players from them (Kanchelski's), getting former rags (Cole) or buying players from them (Cooke after we'd bought him), it almost always ends up in tears somewhere along the line.

why on earth would he do that? If he wanted out he simply wouldnt sign.
From what I've heard he's doubled his wages, and United no longer face losing him for peanuts. To me it just looks like they've got him to sign it for now, then they can let him leave in the summer (which also removes the question of what he was going to do until january) for a big fee.
Like I said though, perhaps I'm reading too much into it.

No he is right about the contract. Its not as if they are printing a standard contract off the internet and saying 'here you go stick your name on that'. Taggart and his motley crew were not panicking over selling Rooney they were panicking over selling Rooney at the wrong time ie not enough time on his contract to demand an exorbitant wedge. I suspect they have agreed a deal in principle with the details to be ironed out later and an eye on flogging Rooney for big bucks in the summer or the year after. I also bet that there will be stipulations about investing in the squad and player acquisitions triggering a release clause if not met.
The amusing thing is SSN banging on about Rooney staying for another 5 years and staying until 2015 as if the length of the contract for any player had any bearing in how long he stays at the club. Glazers/taggart/rooney have hatched something between them that suits all parties and takes the heat out of this situation. Remains to be seen how this all ends.
In the meantime we have had great fun. Rooney went public and said their squad is shite, we had taggart crying on telly and we beat the Poles. Cracking week.
