UEFA's Fifth Official.

What an absolute waste of fuckin time and money this is.Tonight we had 2 stone cold shouts for a pen that only the fifth official could judge correctly and both times they stood there like statues.Get technology in asap then the decisions that need making will be.

Technology gets away with human error, or, is it the human choice?

Either way, it shows that there is an agenda, even if it was just the ref over-riding the rest - for what reason?

I'm agreeing with you mate, in my own way. I like the way the 'Behind the Goal's Ref's'' have their likkle wand's that they would usually wave about, but not once did they raise that wand (Harry Potter like). Yes, we know it's got button's to electrecute the ref whence pressed, but they can't even be arsed doing that whether right or wrong, they are just at the mercy of the ref, just like the linesman.

I personally have no doubts that all ref's work for the firm and are given their order's pre-match, and the best way to control the game is to have but one person calling the shot's, who in turn tell the other's what they want. Ie. You take your cue from me, that is all!

I get what you are saying mate but one day a CL Final will be decided by one of them guys not raising his finger so to speak and all hell will break loose. Then they will bring technology in after the horse has bolted.

If they wanted to bring technology in, they would have done it by now. The way things are at the moment, things can be tweaked and manipulated. The flagless flagstick holders are supposed to placate the masses who clamour on about ref's being dodgy or unable to control things properly. They brought headsets in for refs and linesmen to communicate, but they cover their mouths and we're never allowed to hear what is actually said between them? Why this lack of tranparancy? In rugby you hear it live ffs!

Something is well rotten in teh heart of football, I mean Qatar just got a world cup for God's sake! I fear for us in this competetion, as there's so many Russian teams in it. It'll probably be an unmarked brown envelope that knocks City out. WHole thing stinks.

Now that I have seen them in a few matches, I wonder what good are they for ? Not once have I seen the wand raised. Not once have I noticed the Ref delaying a decision to consult with them. So really I don't see the point.
Its inconceivable that the ref behind the goal couldn't have seen at least 1 of the 3 handballs against Juve ! Do they wait for the ref to ask them or can they actually make a decision like the linesmen do.

What i find really odd is at times it looks like they want to make a decision but wont. Im not even sure they know what they are doing themselves.

They only have the power to officiate on goal-line matters- not whether there can be a pen awarded or not.

Also, I assume the fifth officials actually earn bugger all- you only get a few hundred quid to ref an international game, so to stand on the goal-line for the UEFA Cup, which has nowhere near the amount of cash involved as the Champs' League, should net you a couple of hundred, plus expenses, at a guess.

Have to admit I wasn't aware of that. It makes them even more pointless.

The part of it I'm uncertain about is whether it's the entire goal-line (ie corner flag to corner flag) or just the part between the sticks. I have a feeling they may have no jurisdiction over corners and goal kicks, either.

I feel sorry for them. They don't even get a flag to put on their sticks, no wonder they feel left out.

Fifa has approved the use of two additional assistant referees for the next two seasons of UEFA Champions League football.

Uefa experimented with two extra officials in the Europa League last season and this has now been expanded to include Europe's premier club competition.

The role of the additional officials will be to help the referee and his assistants make decisions regarding incidents within the penalty areas.

At a previous meeting held in Zurich, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) reviewed the experiment of additional assistant referees and have decided to continue the trials.

The extra officials will be introduced for the start of this season's Champions League and the experiment will last for at least two years.

Meanwhile, Fifa has confirmed that goal-line technology will be on the agenda of the next Annual Business Meeting of the IFAB in October 2010.

Calls for the technology were renewed at this summer's World Cup finals after a number of incidents, one of which was Frank Lampard'sshot that crossed the line that was missed by the officials.
