Pretty sure Cooky said last year it made no financial sense to buy the stadium.

A lot depends on how confident the Club is in pushing up attendances to 60,000 and beyond, assuming obviously regular CL football and domestic success. I'm not clear how easy it would be to add substantial capacity to the existing ground ( I presume payments to the Council would go up in that case) and if not whether the club would consider building a brand new purpose built stadium instead.

Pretty sure the new deal with the council was flat rate mate (last year). HIgher, but not attendance-based, with future expansion is mind. 85,000 is the latest buzz. Please refer to the other site that cannot be named - thread of about 1000 pages now. (City millionaires plan to turn Eastlands into Las Vegas)

Why..??? Getting bigger yes, owning is just not relevant, how many players being offered £300k per week to come and play for us say "I will only come if you own your stadium"?????

The only known fact is that City agreed to pay the council a flat £3m a season, instead of attendance based, which cost about £2m.

You can therefore speculate City is expecting additional attendances. In part, that could be from better cup runs and CL, but I'm not sure that would be worth blowing £1m on.

To compete under fair play rules, we need higher attendances. I'd therefore speculate that City is planning on extending the Council's asset at our cost and hence bringing additional jobs to the area (construction, then burger based). That's a double win for the council.

The idea they would annoy one of the world's wealthiest people, who is intent on blowing a lot of his own cash in the area is ridiculous.

Good post. Being as objective as you can what do you think our maximum average attendance could be if we achieved regualr CL football and competed seriously for, and sometimes won, the major domestic honours every season? I've heard talk elsewhere of the club looking at an 85,000 capacity stadium. Is that realistic both in terms of attendances and the technical problems of increasing the capacity of the existing stadium?

I'm not sure how it will work with increasing the crowd, and only others can theorise. The problem we have is that we have lost generations of fans to the Rags because of their recent success. It's only those loyal City fans who have advocated their loyalties to their son's and daugther's that have kept the faith going, and now their faith will be rewarded.

We can sustain bigger crowds but it'll be down to what we do on the pitch, and over successive years. The Rags are now struggling to fill thier stadium for games, it'll take us a very long time to ensure an average crowd as theirs, with an emphasis on the further development on the site to push ahead of time. Those who wish to visit the Swamp will most definately want to spend a little time at ours as well.

Don't forget that before the premier league and Euro 96, the rags were struggling to fill 45000 seats. They hit form just as football took off. It would be very difficult to catch them, but don't underestimate the power of continual success.

I agree. I believe we have enough fans locally to fill a 60-70k stadium, but only at the right price. Success will be the secret to a greater crowd, upwards of 65k.

It's got fuck nothing to do with what the rags have done or what they might do in the future. It is all about what we do. If we become successful, we'll start to attract new fans. The more we win, the more will come.
The days that clubs were wholly local have well and truly gone. We no longer have only Manchester as our limit.

Whilst looking for bits of info for the Salford Community Stadium, I come across a portfolio of sporting venues designed by AFL Architects. Tucked away right at the bottom was a project named simply 'Concept Football Stadium.' Now, see what you think below, but the interior of the stadium looks very much like a re-jigged COMS, and the exterior artists impression has lots of people in blue:

Everyone forgets that mate. Most of all these doomers that say we will never get more fans. It will come, trust the Sheik.

The sky is the wrong colur, don't get blue skies in Manchester but does look a nice stadium. I very much doubt you will see much grey once we are developed

I think also that your point of not seeing much grey once we are developed is very well made Sweeny mate....Wasn't being unable to see each other in grey shirts, the excuse made by the rags players a few years ago when they were losing 0-3 at half time to Southampton.
