Chicken Kiev - Who's going

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

I'm making this post.

It contains a lot of made up shit that I've drawn my own conclusions on and has very little to do with the rest of the thread.

I've possibly read two or the lines of the odd post and seen what I want to see.

Now this is my inaccurate summary.

I'm closing with an irrelevant reference to the past.

Plenty of people can't go for genuine reasons of course. City have a lot of fans though. This could & should be a decent turnout.

It wasn;t that long ago we were dying to play in Europe.

The lack of interest really suprises me for this one. I know it's easy to say from here, but I genuinely do not get how 20k can all give it a miss. Yeah some have legit reasons, but lets be honest a lot just cannot be arsed.

I'm starting to get quite annoyed now.... :)

the games's on telly, it's at 6pm, we're 2-0 down, and we'll still get more than we used to for a home league game just a few years ago.

We took 400 to a winnable league cup tie at plymouth in the late 80's, where were the gloryhunters then?

leave out the billy big balls nonsense or we'll start to sound like chelsea (avg attendance 15 years ago 21K - man city avg attendance that year 22K.) PS - Sheff Wed avg. att. that year 27K. Get off yer high horse.

It's a bigger game than most home league games from a few years ago. One of the most disappointing things about it, is that people don't realise it.

i completely agree ted - but that would ignore the fact that things have changed and the league (and season "card" holders) are far more important now. it's not just us you know.

I just always assumed that if we ever got to this stage, as we've not won anything for some people's lifetimes, we'd at least give it a few seasons of enthusiastic support before we lost interest.

I am with you John - it just blows me away that we can attract more for our home games in div 1 of 1998 than we can in an FA cup or Europa cup game in 2011 - we must be part of an old breed - just cannot understand it.

I thought the earlier comment about the fact that there will be lots of blues watching the game in the pub and spending more than the cost of going is an insight - people have changed - maybe it is the availability of media to provide live coverage - it is not just us many many clubs across Europe have half empty stadiums on a regular basis - I just thought / hoped we were better supported than that

I'm going as I always do and don't blame (or rubbish) those that choose not to go to this or any of our other cup game. We're not exactly easy on the eyes are we?

I will throw into the mix how many people work 9 to 5 these days.I am working 2 till 10 tomorrow so i have no chance of goin to the game and before anyone says book a days hol or pull a sickie i have only been there 2 weeks so thats a no no.My point is we are governed by our jobs in these times of recession so if its a choice of work or footy work will win i'm afraid.

Many of those clubs have played this competition & Champion's Lg for years though. I could understand it a lot more if we'd been playing in it for years & grown to think of it as 'run of the mill' but we've only had one decent run in this competition since the 70's.

That's like something R.H. would come up with. I've read your points & my earlier post pretty much replies to it. Just because you think it's fine that everyone can be arsed to go to the rags game but not this one, doesn't mean we all have to like it.

Sorry Arjan, I didn't make that clear...my bad.
It wasn't a dig at the crowd levels...though I have never understood why we have always tended to have significanlty lower crowds for European games than the bread and butter league games. Personally I have always thought that the Euro games were a touch more exotic.
But...for a group of fans who have been so starved of success and European competition, over so many years, it absolutely baffles me that we can't, seemingly generate enough enthusiasm to draw a much better response from our supporters.

My dig was aimed at the attitude of the fans and how they respond to events on the pitch. If things are going well, it can be a laugh a minute, Poznans galore and the good old City humour, as we saw towards the end of the reading game. When things are going badly, City fans tend to remain pretty quiet. Gone are the days when the fans pulled their tripes out to generate an atmosphere to drive the team on. At one time, if we conceded a goal, the 1st chant you ever heard was a deafening response of C-I-T-Y.

Maybe...chicken and egg Mate...Do they lift us?...or do we lift them?

that's what I don't get John. Me and Andie said the same all through the last UEFA campaign.

I absolutely loved those nights, just the novelty factor of the off beat foreign fans....It baffled me that more didn't want to be there. Sure they were all on terrestrial TV but, fuck me, I'd rather be there than watch ITV/Channel 5...by a factor of about 1000.

Finance is absolutely a factor but as someone pointed out I'm sure that most blues who watch tonight in the pub will spend a lot more than 15 quid. I know I will and my beer is about a third of the price of the UK here.

Those are the people I don't understand, not the ones who can't afford it and watch from home....and there will be a bloody lot of them

totally agree with all of that john. that's what i meant about us cutting out the big balls nonsense earlier - i do think we are becoming the chelsea of the north in more ways than one. Interesting that you talk about chicken and egg - my post about crowds 15 years ago was intended to illustrate a point. the type of fan has changed imho. i know loads of blues that stopped going regularly in the few years after we moved to eastlands and one of the 2 main reasons are cost and lack of atmosphere. they've often been replaced by families/sit down and watch quietly/only going to the league games but will reappear for a semi/final types.

i must confess i'm one of them. there have been a couple of games this season that i've thought "right, only tickets left are in the 3rd tier/north stand.... fuck it, may as well watch on telly." chicken and egg indeed.

conversely, i know at least 2 seasoncard holders that have decided not to go to wembley coz they can't stomach the thought of being there if we lose! (and before anyone asks, their tickets have been allocated already!).

Can someone please explain to me why we got bigger attendances in the third tier against the likes of York City than we do in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup? Madness! Where the hell is everyone? We used to dream of nights like this!!

Mancini football > 2.0 down > Shit atmosphere

Just 3 clear reasons why this game will have a low attendance. I am an eternal pessimist but think that at 2.0 down there is the chance of seeing something quite special tonight, which is why it will be my first Europa game.

As for the rest of the Europa and FA cup games, i'll admit that before Sunday I couldn't be arsed for at least 2 of the above reasons, and you can throw in wank opposition. I suppose I have got into the habit of not going when I dont have to under Mancini because he bores me to fucking death. It was the same under Keegan/Pearce, although I went the whole hog and gave up my season ticket until Sven arrived.

Supporting your club is not an unconditional thing - as many clubs have found out to their cost in recent years, including the rags. Aside from the economic issues, if the manager continually sends his team out to play like cunts and without a smile in their football, people will stop going - and season ticket holders will certainly vote with their feet when it comes to paying extra to watch dross, even if it is only £15.

some people left Wembley before the final whistle in 1999. Those of us who stayed were well rewarded.
I'll be there tonight and with a bit of luck will be talking about it for years.
By then of course, we'll have had a gate of 80,000
