That banner(0 years)

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

I think the banner thing has always hurt us more, because we never came near to having an answer, and it was always a cheap shot fot the commentators.
I also think that if another banner went up about City, it will rebound back at them, the media, DO see us as contenders now, and I imagine more comments along the lines off, "We wouldn't be suprised if that banner is down as soon as it's up".
Apart from that, the meaning of the banner now has been so much devalued by our status, and the fact that we are challengers, rather than just making up the numbers. So it has become irrelevant, move on!

Here's what they posted on their website

The banner was good while it lasted. It was up there for over 10 years and I dont think any Utd fan could have envisaged it being there for that long, especially those who made "17 years" banners and took them on a Euro away all them years back.
It was inevitable that they would win somethning at some point in time, even Portsmouth have won the FA Cup in recent years, Birmingham with the Carling Cup and the likes of Middlesbrough and Bolton. Any red in the world all those years back would have grabbed the chance for Utd to win the 19th record title if it meant city won the fA Cup and just as Utd did in 1968, 1999 and now in 2011, we have overshadowed their day by achieving more ourself (Although how any city fan can even compare a 2nd divison play off win in '99 with Utds treble is beyond comparison).

Not in favour of doing a ticker style banner, as the concept will be remembered for the City ticker banner. In recent years the banner has become an obsession to City and their layers, with more of them more obsessed about the actual banner then they were about actually winning a cup.

The media focus will be on that gap on sunday, although last nights reserve game highlighted the gap. What people fail to remember, is that the banner has missed games before, even the Manchester derby game in Feb 2008. We have a small plan for Sunday which flaglady is working on, just something to have the last laugh and keep people guessing as to what will happen with the ticker.

Now we seek ideas for a new banner to go up there, something for the tier itself, rather than the actual small gap its created. So start getting thinking caps on, a thread for ideas already exists.
Something to mark our 19th title.

If the banner comes down, then we will decide what to do with it. the club museum is an option and the new National football Museum opens in Manchester late this year/early next year so that is also another option fo donating it to them.
The banner could also be sold off to raise money for SEF/Charity, although wouldnt want it in the hands of a City fan.

Why the fuck post that shite on here?

Any particular fucking reason?

It is fine for us to say we are above this shit, it shows how bitter they are and how obsessed they are about us. It is fine to say that we should focus on City and ignore their continued jibes at us. It is also fine to consider it all a bit vulgar, juvenile and sad and consider we are above that sort of thing.
But, we should remember that like it or not, we are now a football brand that is competing with them on the World stage and in the World's marketplace. To allow this to continue, to allow them to publically ridicule us, is also to allow them to diminish our brand.

We know better. we know that it took them all those years between trophies but do they ? Does the media? Do the potential City fans who our club are seeking to attract? That is why it was necessary to have it removed.

That banner did damage us. Like advertisding, the world's media saw it and believed it. It allowed the world's/rag's media to cement the perception that they were great and we were just a litlle shit outfit that had no history and no chance of success. It gave the football/rag media a tool to batter us with.

If you don't agree, then ask yourself this. After we won the cup... Why was the 35 years mentioned in every news bulletin, every headline, every story about ur victory? Why did the media find it so important to make sure that everyone was aware of our 35 years of failure. Advertising works and that banner did its job. It started as a humourous jibe by an idiot who knew no better...it became a instrument with which the rag media ridiculed us.

Should we ignore it? LIKE FUCK WE SHOULD.
THE CITY IS OURS campaign was in response to the survey proving City fans' ascendancy in the City of Manchester.
THE WELCOME TO MANCHESTER poster was to emphasise we alone play in Manchester.
THE ZERO YEARS BANNER AT WEMBLEY wasn't just a response to the rags stupid banner, it was also a major statement by the club that we had arrived.

@philmcnulty 35 years ticking clock banner taunting City has indeed disappeared from the Stretford End. In its place? "19 Times".

Good to see that they are now concentrating on their own club at long last.

Great post John and nail on the head.

Fair enough for celebrating their own success......for once.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?
