Andrea Traverso – the man tasked by president Michel Platini with introducing the system – said last year: "Should the clubs put in place specific structures that allow them, in ways we didn't think about, to easily go around some of the principles, we could amend these rules to catch up with these situations. You can call them loopholes but you can call them as well an evolution of the market which could not be taken into consideration at the time the rules were drafted."

What he is saying is that UEFA are now determined to stop sponsorships deals that don't suit them. Therefore, they will continue to make the rules up as they go along to exclude clubs from the Champions League, the competition set up in the 'nineties to avert a threatened European Super League of Man U, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, et al.
Corrupt to the core.

1. I'd be fairly certain that's an old quote which hasn't just been written because of our apparent new naming rights deal.
2. Platini himself has already said that the chances of clubs being excluded from the Champions League are almost non-existant. Clubs just need to demonstrate that they are moving towards self-sufficiency and not relying on a rich benefactor. We are doing that, especially as the Sheikh will not want to keep pumping his own money in forever.
The club are doing the right things. We don't have anything to worry about. These are more guidelines than rules, Platini himself has said that.

Yes, it's a quote from last year, apparently, but this "in ways we didn't think about" line and his talk of closing loopholes smacks of arrogance. It is a sign of their desperation, too, when they talk of clubs breaking the "spirit of the rules" - a catch all phrase that can lend fluidity to a hastily drawn up and flawed rule book. Still, if they are unable to act retrospectively, and are unable to show City and others exactly what rules they are violating, then they will have failed. This does, of course, point towards City being just about the last club who will be able to become major contenders in club football from a moderate base.

Point is though that we we've been arguing for nearly decade now what to call the ground and every fucker uses different name. It's sorted now for time being so it's actually kind of relieving.
