Lets just face it.... our stadium is dog turd at generating an atmosphere.... yes on the odd occasion we can get the place rocking.
Remember Maine Road where most games there was a top atmosphere?!
The vocal fans are in the same relative position to each other seperated by the away fans, as they were at maine road.
It is the design of the stadium, the distance between the fans and the roof, and the angle of the roof etc. The North Stand at Maine Road was a single tier, much like the Kop, and the roof was a long roof that kept the noise in the ground.
The South Stand is two tiers, the second tier, from what I can hear, barely get involved because the noise from below doesnt really make its way up to the second, and not enough for to get them to join in. Also, notice how the roof is higher and slopes upwards, this pretty makes sure that a lot of noise is diverted upwards out of the ground, and not back down towards the fans/players/pitch etc.
The fans are not the issue, where the away fans sit is not an issue, its the design of the stadium that drastically affects our atmosphere.
