Amazing that if he'd just called him a fucking cunt instead of a fucking black cunt this would not be an issue.

Doomy if you´re going to deny calling John an old boring fart please use the correct adjective order and not the New World version ;)

This had me cracking up watching MOTD, but I wasn't sure if 'colored' had as bad a connotation in Britain as it does in the States. I guess it does and only a truly idiotic person could unflinchingly throw in a racially charged word when talking about modern racism. All you can do is laugh at the sheer stupidity. Makes you wonder though why he is on TV to give worthless opinoins

I don't know mate, he should have been a bit more savvy as he knew the discussion would move that way, but in this day and age you could just as easily get fired for using black instead of coloured if the mood of the day caused folk to complain. Its fucking impossible to judge the mood at the time - so whilst "people of colour" used to be a pc way of describing black folk, I would probably consider that is patronising and derogatory.

Its a fucking minefield and I don't think Hansen is guilty of anything other than choosing the wrong word in the context of the discussion

Calling someone 'coloured' can be seen as institutional racism because it implies 'white' is the standard against which anyone's skin colour is measured.

As Spartacus has already alluded to, the term "coloured", though seen as patronising and even somewhat insulting now, was the accepted polite term of reference used to describe all people of Asian or Afro Carib ethnicity. It was considered the correct term to use in all society and was also accepted and used by black people themselves. Check out the song "Backlash" by Nina Simon as one example.
It was only during the mid to late 60s that things started to change and black became the accepted term.

Racism and descrimination disgusts me in any form but, I think there are two groups, those who are too young to understand the change and even some who seek to find insult where none was meant.

The former Tottenham player Rohan Ricketts, now with Shamrock Rovers, tweeted: "Is this Alan Hansen guy taking the f****** piss?? I'm not coloured??? He is part of the problem when using that word. We are BLACK Alan! [sic]."

He added: "Alan Hansen is more coloured than a black person. But still we would not call him or another white man coloured." According to the Sun, the former England international Stan Collymore said: "Coloured? What colour would that be? Blue? Green? Orange?"

point is that hansen was AFRAID to use the work black, fearing that if he said it he would be labelled a racist. fucking ridiculous.

It is so easy for younger people who grew up with the term to criticise and judge the older who grew up with another term. It shows a lack of knowledge and/or understanding.

Familiarity with and acceptance of a term doesn't form an excuse - that's the defence Suarez is relying on.

I'm 33, and since being a kid, certain words have come and gone as the accepted way to describe the minority members of society - not necessarily in a denigrating way, but more by means of description. Perhaps someone of your vintage would have found it perfectly acceptable to use some of the words that you really would be fucking shot for today, and I know people now who have to be very careful what they say not because they mean anything derogatory by it, but because they are just used to how things were.

As time has gone on, we have had to use black, people of colour, coloured, black, coloured, and as the years go by it all becomes very confusing. I really now don't know if someone asked me to describe a particular person in the working environment how I would do it comfortably.

So it seems that now, Africa/Carribean folk are once again black......and this is confirmed by the oracle Stan Collymore who decribes himself as black aside from the fact that he clearly is nowhere near black - but I would say "of black origin"

So Alan Hansen was fucked whatever he said last night.

I make no excuse for Suarez.I haven't seen the facts, so am unable to judge. My point was about a cultural change that took place within my lifetime and one I experienced. Coloured was a term I used in the earlt 60s, without malice or predjudice. At that time, it wasconsidered acceptable to me, to society and to my black friends. Some time during the 60s, I was politely asked to use the term black by my friends. They themselves had not long changed what they considered to be acceptable to them. There wasn't a problem.

My point is that because I had black mates who asked for the change, I did so. Many older people may still use the term without wishing to cause insult or patronise, simply because they know no different.

Sometimes, we should look a bit deeper before making judgements.
