Agreed. It isnt rocket science.
If he brings De Rossi in, unlikely though it is, he will cover Ya Ya whilst he's away and then replace De Jong who will be gone in the summer.

If he brings De Rossi in he won't just be cover for Yaya, he'll likely push Barry out of the starting XI.
De Rossi is an immense midfielder (and centre half amazingly), I hope we do all we can to get him!

De Rossi is not going to come to sit on the bench. He will expect to be a regular starter, also the wage mentioned is something you can't afford for a player being constantly on the bench, not even us can do that. From what I've heard, Roma has offered him £5M per year, that's £100k per week more or less, while City has offered him £128k per week; that's not the wage of someone being on the bench most of the time.
However I think in the end he's going to stay at AS Roma, he has been a fan of the team since he was a kid and he's been touted to be the next captain after Totti retires.
I thought Luis Enrique's idea of having him play as centre half against Juventus was very similar to Guardiola's use of Yaya first and then Mascherano in the same way.
EDIT: the lastest news I've got on him are that there will be a meeting between Roma's board and his agent this or next week to define the situation once and for all; reportedly Roma are tired of waiting for an answer, they won't raise their offer to match City's but in the deal there are some bonuses linked to the team results so the difference is less than it seems. Also, it's not clear if there will be a buyout clause of around £21M but only exploitable from 2013 onwards, when he will be 30.
The problems as far as I know are that City offers more money, and that he would prefer a simpler deal without bonuses but only a basic wage.

I don't know if we are in the market to buy De Rossi or not but you seem to be falling into a trap that many fans and even the media fall into when you say we are buying him to spend a lot of time (or not) to sit on the bench.
I do not think that Mancini ever considers buying players to occupy the bench or as cover for another 1st team player.
I suggest that Mancini buys all players (except the younger developing players) to play in the 1st team.
It is: A...The form of the player that defines whether he is on the pitch or on the bench.
or B...The tactics, strategy or energy levels that dictate that.
The player takes responsibility. If Dzeko had outplayed and outscored Ballo, it would be he who would be considered 1st choice.
