What a horrible twat he is.

napoli were worse. cheating and diving are part of their tactics (and the same is true for nearly all of the continental clubs.) sadly, i'm convinced we need to cheat more if we're to succeed in european comp.

I cant agree. Chelsea and Drogba in particular were a disgrace with the diving. I would love to see "retrospective action" or better still Referee's assistant on a monitor able to advise officials in game, similar to how they do in rugby union.
The game should be clamping down on cheating, we shouldnt be saying "cheat more"

I agree with your last line but the head of FIFA Mr Sepp Blatter thinks that cheating is ok & just 'being clever' , so it's unlikely to happen.

the commentators didn't help matters last night by acting like Drogba's antics were "cute" or just that of a seasoned professional.

it's one thing if he used his technique to create the foul, but the all out cheating antics in football aren't tolerated in ANY other sport i've ever seen to be honest.

Even in the NBA which has a track record of players who "flop" as we call it here, there isn't the glorification given to it...and refs usually aren't one to fall prey to it as oftenly.

it's diabolical, and seeing the success some players have just propagates it, and gets kids thinking this is how you play.

Drogba was a joke last evening, and to think the headlines are all about how fucking fantastic he was. Sad.

And then there's our Mario who actually GETS fouled and couldn't get a whistle to save his life. He's probably so confused and frustrated by refereeing that he doesn't even know how to respond to the niggly little kicks and pushes that ought to add up to some free kicks and cards during the course of a match.

cheers

I am not wavering on this one. Specially as I am watching a 2nd tier La Liga side rip the ass out of the team top of the Premiership.

The original post was part tounge on cheek. But I do believe the days of 3/4 semi finalist coming from England are long gone.

Just to add my tuppence worth over Chelsea last night. It was incredible how well those older players played last night now that AVB has gone. It's almost like they have no shame at all.

So Chelsea, who look like finishing 5th in the English Prem, now look a lock to make the semi-final of the Champions League and will only be knocked out by the stand-out team in the world at the moment in Barcelona.

Surely this is an indication of the ultimate strength of the English Prem, that the 5th placed team who've been underwehelming all year, can make such a run.

Yes it is.

Imo we are a better side than Bayern & Napoli if the comparison was over 38 games & rags are a beter side than Bilbao & Basel over the same period. Van Buyten & Co wouldn't hack it now in the Prem & neither would the defences of Napoli, Basel or Bilbao. Over the course of two games though, they are tricky sides to play but in the end, City Utd & Arsenal were shit in Europe & played below their average standard (well apart from rags who normally play like that & get away with it, like last night ).

Chelsea should have won both legs v Napoli & showed what an average side they are. We made a right fucking mess of it.

So, a team that could finish 6th in the English Prem, knocks off Barca the holders in their own back yard, playing with 10 for 55 mins and without their 3 best c-halves too.

League in decline? Isnt that complete bullshit?

MAJOR BULLSHIT ! And wait for tonight when Bayern knocks out Real so that no Spanish teams are in the final. The quality of football in the EPL is amazing and you cant argue that with Chelsea's performance last night.

I put the slump down to how competitive the league had become its so damn competitive teams care less about Europe. Not saying it's not important its just not the most important unless your chelsea as we all know about there owners obsession with winning it. Looks at the rags they went from finalists to falling out the groups. We did that. The end of the top four did that. Everybody wants in CL next year and to win the title this they lose sight of the CL this year.

I think you're right, the new order at the top of the Prem these days means no one is safe - the days of a settled top four fighting it out amongst themselves are over for now and the teams with a chance of one of the top four positions have to put far more effort and emphasis into/on the league.

I happened to think the English First Division, later Premiership, was the best and most competitive league in the world even when my country's pitches were stepped on by the likes of Platini, Maradona, Kroll, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Gullit, Cerezo, Mancini, Vialli, Baresi, Scirea, Pablito Rossi...

I see the point developed on this thread, but

You'd be surprised by the loads of things i still dont know without having a hair flowing anymore... :-)

imho, Ruud Krol had been the best sweeper/CB of the modern era, despite taking part to the glorious 1974 WC campaign mainly lined as LB into the Rinus Michel's "Total Football" machine. an extremely intelligent defender of rare ability at positioning, great in the air, featured with very well educated feet that enhanced his playing versatility enabling him to play also as a decent DM.
I suppose a comparison to our Vinnie isn't unfair once assumed that our skipper still has margins for improvement.
I am definitely biased toward him as well as any member of that amazingly terrific Orange/Ajax side, tho. I was 11 then, and knowing only the italian catenaccio or the classic 4-4-2 english styles, watching that breathtaking new footy had been like switching from candles to electric lighting.

Arsenal, United and Chelsea will all qualify for the knock out stages.

You're aware that two teams go through from each group and both Fulham and Birmingham sit second in their groups with Spurs level on points with second and two very easy games to play right? Because I don't think you are.

This is just one season where English clubs haven't dominated the CL so far.

On top of this the Spanish and Italian leagues are arguably at their weakest for some time. Real and Barca are always guaranteed to go through but third spot in Spain is wide open - Villareal and Valencia are average sides now and we're all waiting on the rise of Malaga. Serie A has just lost its fourth CL spot through performing so badly in the past 5 years - don't just take your results from this season.

The one thing that has been refreshing this year is seeing more sides from outside the big four countries go through - APOEL, Ajax,Trabzonspor, Marseilles, Porto, Basel etc all qualified or on the verge.

There is no English slump, so taking about big scoring games being the decline is irrelevant.

Held up well in November and holds up now. Totally agree apart from United qualifying from the group stages.

Is their an agreed mechanism to benchmark leagues?

Spain have 2 of the 4 CL semi finalists, England 1 and Germany 1. Does that mean Spain is the strongest league followed by England and Germany and then all the rest are joint 4th?

Or does the country who produces the CL winners automatically become the strongest league in the world?

Or is benchmarking a knockout cup competition against a 38 game season just silly?
