They're increasingly becoming a joke club.

Some interesting opinions on here, but I think Rafa Benitez would be a baby step in the right direction- nothing more. He'd probably get Liverpool in the top 6 and win a cup to appease the fans but nothing more. Have no allusions, breaking into the top 4 for the Scousers now WOULD be like winning the league, no question.

I often wonder just how split Mourinho was in the summer of '04 before joining Chelsea. Was he genuinely interested in the post at Liverpool, had it been offered, and how would history have changed had he gone to Anfield?

It would be interesting to see Mourinho go to a club where everything wasn't on a plate for him to succeed.

I know he did well to build a team in Portugal but doing it here is a different matter.

Could he be tempted, in the future, to take on a situation like Liverpool and actually try to build a team or will he just do the obvious and replace one of the top managers here ?

If Liverpool don't get back in the Champion's League soon, they will be in the position we were in, where the top sides have moved away from them not just in in quality but also financially & they need an influx of money to catch up.

From what I've heard here in Italy one of the main candidates for the Anfield post is AVB, who might want to prove something to Chelsea and to himself taking on the Prem again. Surely he must have learned from his mistakes at Chelsea and won't repeat them at Anfield, if he goes there?

However, it seems that AVB has also been approached by Roma to take over after Luis Enrique resigned at the end of the season, and being that from what the papers say AVB holds in high consideration Roma's general manager Franco Baldini (they say he wanted Baldini at Chelsea but was denied by Abramovich), it may be that he will choose to test himself in the Serie A instead...we will know more in the next few days I guess.

Appointing benitez would be a mistake. are liverpool, with their current squad, better than 8th? of course they are, but we've seen what benitez does...buy and sell and alienate players...the owners are not going to give him the money to do this. The signings theyve made in the last three years have been, suarez excepted, pretty poor. dalglish is out of touch with the modern game. he was out of touch at newcastle. comolli? what a joker...i could have done his job and saved them the agony of henderson, carroll and downing. benitez wouldnt suffer any of those but how much would they fetch when they left? there is your answer, and that is why they want Martinez. He'll do as he is told.

I think Carrol will be a different proposition under the right manager (provided he doesn't go on the piss that is). He'll never be Aguero on the ball but he's not the donkey Liverpool have made him look & there's nobody even close to him in the world at getting on the end of a cross. If you just treat him as a normal oufield player in a pass and move game then put decent crosses in, he's a frightening proposition. Nobody can stop him if the service is right.

Sooner or later someone will harness that ability within a proper football environment rather than just lumping long balls at him. Ironically, Pardew probably would have done that at Newcastle.
