England Squad

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

England Squad

Falling apart at the seams?

Johnson - Toe infection.

Barry - Torn stomach muscle.

Lampard - Not sure yet but going for scans tomorrow.

Anyone else?

Who's next and who's the next to get called up in their place - Carrick, Micah?

When they called up a CB to replace a MF you know things are bad.

I struggle to think of another English midfielder, other than Scholes, who is good enough. And THAT is the problem.

To be honest, Milner shouldnt really be good enough for England, not unless he can be moved into the middle to be the engine room

Joe Cole will be back at this rate, and Michael Owen.

Just shows how far we've come in the last 10 years................

I think it would be more Shearer, Barnes and Beardsley, Lineker at a push.

I've heard this, too. I'm wondering whether he intends to make himself available for the Olympics. He'd have to be an overage player though (misses the cutoff by 6 months, I think), and, providing the Olympics aren't in so much of a financial dire that they have to call up Beckham to flog a few shirts, may be in with a chance of the captaincy.

Certainly, the prospect of playing for Britain in Britain beats warming the bench for England in Ukraine.

also i'd rather win an olympic medal for my country than lose in the quarterfinals.

didn't Pablo and Kun win a gold medal last time around? i think so.

Carrick should be in the squad ahead of the rest of the midfielders, problem is(and i can see his point) is that he didnt want to go on the standby list and train with the squad from last week on and then have to wave goodbye to them at the airport as they went to Ukraine while he went home.

Hodgson should of named a squad of 30 and worked with them up to the deadline inc richards and carrick and then at deadline assess everything and make a decision on his squad, would of gave players time to impress and would of made the standby players feel like they werent wasting their time(eg A.Johnson, he goes home while lads go to Euros now)

The thing is the press always make a big thing of everything surrounding england and the final squad selection is like the fucking x factor...I think hodgson was mindful of this and wanted to avoid it, and the pressure associated with it which obviously gets to some of them. carrick doing a bottom lip job doesnt do anyone any favours...but he only seems a worthwhile choice now because henderson is so average. Personally id have got danny murphy in there...good user of the ball. england desperately need players who can keep possesion...its like the ball is a hot potato when they play and I just cant be excited by the prospect of watching them any more...I dont need the hassle.

I know where you are coming from mate, I feel like that too usually. Sick of building my hopes up and then being left disappointed. I felt optimisitc about a week ago, after seeing Chelsea win and stuff, but when you see that Downing and Carroll started the friendly last week, a central defender in Jagielka replaces barry and then Jordan Henderson looks set to replace Lampard, Im starting to lose faith again!

It's of no consequence to me, but I've no idea how Carrick isn't in that squad ahead of King Kenny's troglodyte trio - Downing managed 0 goals/0 assists, Gerrard played 12 games and Henderson showed he has potential (to put it kindly).

It's probably all moot though - too many water carriers in midfield as it is and too many injuries. It's a tournament, so you might pull it off, but it'd be pretty surprising.

This is the least optimistic I've ever been with an England side. The laws of football will probably dictate that we now do rather well!

Bang on.

Hodgson has made a balls up of this. Had he followed the above advice he would now be in position to select the best available squad. Instead he has alienated people and is left having to pick a mug like Henderson.

He would have seen that AJ was a better bet than Downing, Carrick a better bet than Henderson and that Micah is a better bet than Jones or Johnson.

Schoolboy stuff really from a man with his experience.

talking to a scum fan at work and he said he'd take Johnson ahead of downing even if Johnson wasnt match fit. the fact even a knuckle dragger talks sense on this says it all. two friendlies could have got Adam up to speed..one of the few players we have with the guts to make things happen and he's here watching it on telly. as if we can afford to turn those type of players away. its ridiculous

I've drawn up lots of brackets for this tournament for the pub bet (limited to 3 per person), I just can't bring myself to upt England advancing from their group.

A group with the host country, france and sweden ... which of those teams does england beat even when they've got a talented side?

Honestly you could have taken beckham instead of downing and you would have been much much stronger. It's almost depressing, and that's coming from an American who usually revels in England playing shit.
