THAT Goal

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Both hugely significant goals in our history.

Most important goal now is the next one we score.

That said, I'd go for Dickov. If Aguero hadn't scored, I'd be gutted but confident we'd win it next season. If Dickov hadn't scored, we could all be watching Maine Rd FC now (apart from all you glory hunters who only started supporting City after the Dickov goal...)

Sergios for me and all this stuff about Dickov's goal saving us is a bit OTT methinks just progressed us a year. With the side we had then it was to good to be where it was.

Manchester City:
GK 1 Nicky Weaver
RB 2 Lee Crooks 85'
LB 3 Richard Edghill
CB 4 Gerard Wiekens
CB 5 Andy Morrison (c) 61'
LM 6 Kevin Horlock
CM 7 Michael Brown 61'
CM 8 Jeff Whitley
CF 9 Paul Dickov
CF 10 Shaun Goater
RM 11 Terry Cooke
Substitutes:
FW 12 Gareth Taylor 85'
DF 13 Tony Vaughan 61'
MF 14 Ian Bishop

That team was gonna get us promoted next year if it did not happen that year.

I'd go with Weaver's saves over the Sergio goal.

Weaver's saves were massively important, but by that stage we had the momentum in the match and were looking like the favourites to get promoted.

When Dickov scored his goal, we were down and out, and destined to spend another year in Division 2. The sheer emotion of that moment when his shot hits the net was unbelievable and completely transformed us in a split second. We were only a few seconds from losing that match but his goal changed everything.

Just my two cents anyway...

I agree. But I think more importantly Weaver's saves actually WON us the match and essentially got us promoted. It pisses me off hwo Dickov (who is one of my all time fav City players) gets ALL the plauditsfor that match.

Dickov 1:06 to 1:17 still brings tears to my eyes.

But so does Aguero just on his own.

The importance of Dickov's goal will NEVER be beaten.

This is perceived wisdom these days but I'm not so sure.
The great Gods of Football return things to their natural state. We would have been back at the top by now. we would have been back five years ago. Yes, we were in a shambles, but look at Southampton, in administration, points docked etc, but they have got back from Div 1 fairly quickly from a far worse position than us. Our fans didn't desert us for a start.
Winning the league was something I thought I'd not see us achieve in my lifetime.
Oh and when I read the title of this thread, I instantly assumed it was talking about Sergio's effort. Q.E.D.

There seems to be a need for some of our fans to be melodramatic. We had more money than any club in that division better rep, prestige and pulling power to get players that were medium prem quality. The consequence of Dickov not scoring would have been got over the following year.Would anybody have stopped supporting us if we lost.I think not.

To be fair, the financial implications of not being promoted that season would mean that promotion the following season would have been far from routine. We would have had to sell a number of players to balance the books and could have struggled for a number of years.

It would also have made the Keegan era unlikely & had us yoyoing up & down divisions for the forseeable future, which means the Sheikh would now own Newcastle or similar.

Apparently the Sheikh was interested in Newcastle but was put off by the lack of space around their ground to develop.

Had we still been at Maine Road we would have been in the same position so he would have bought another club.
