People in the States at least now know who city are. 5-10 years ago u tell people you're a city supporter and they start talking about David Beckham.

Interesting that you'd watch the WC Final if England were in it... I know this is clearly hypothetical (but so is saying England) but wouldn't you rather see America in it?

I think we'll really start to push forward in US. As someone said - i think the Nike deal will help a lot.

Ahh fair play. That explains it then! I can see US really coming on in the next 20 years though. I know it seems a long time but its only a few turn-overs of players.

City's victories over ManU and QPR were big for City in the US.

The qpr win resonated with Americans like crazy. It was maddening here really. Hardcore sports fans were loving the drama.

I'm really enjoying this thread and like the fact that US Citizens are more than I thought. Well, more than Doomy anyway.

So Doomie! With regards to my earlier question - is Football (association) your number one sporting passion? I would imagine it is. I cant see how you'd fit another sport's-worth of forum time into your life, unless.... you.... you're not.... cheating on us? Are you?

Is football/soccer your favourite game/main sporting passion or does it come second to one of your more traditional games?

I mean personally, not as a nation. Thats obvious.

The team I've got the most personal time, money, and passion invested in is the Detroit Tigers (baseball), but that goes back almost 30 years. Apart from that I don't follow American sports that much anymore...some Division 2 college athletics, a bit of NFL, and just the postseason in some of the other major sports.

I've supported City for 11 years and I can honestly say that in the last 5-6 years, with nearly every game now televised over here, that City have commanded more of my time as a sports fan than anything else, even the Tigers. There's so much televised football here now that I've taken to watching almost any kind, even enjoying dross like the CONCACAF Champions League.

I live up here in the, I don't know, Cumbria of the U.S., and there is not much in the way of football supporters around here let alone City fans. Loads of kids play the game here as everyone knows, but even the nearest USSF-recognized club is over 100 miles away from my town and they play in the 4th tier of the American pyramid. The point is there is a long way to go in this country in terms of translating participation into supporting a club.

With regards to City, the biggest reason the club is playing catch-up is that the Champions League is a major part of the game's appeal to American fans, and many of them just wouldn't even think to follow a club that wasn't competing in it. Our participation and (hopefully) success in the CL will help us no end in a place like America. As Chelsea have demonstrated, there are many millions of people who like to follow a successful club regardless of how many trophies that club might have won in the 80s and 90s.

Ironically the Rags will benefit us in our long-term growth, as the Manchester derby is already entering the public consciousness over here, and all potential football supporters love a good derby.
"Certainly our programme is a full one, but as a player and as a manager I've always felt that there is only one way to go into a season...and that's to try to win every game.... While we are in four major competitions we shall try to win four major competitions." - Joe Mercer

Nice post MB, the Derby is an all-time seller, most probably a reason why we are here, right now.

I totally agree with everything you said. Again coming from the midwest there are alot of kids ranging from toddlers to college age playing football but not so much supporting major clubs. I work as a part time associate at a sporting goods store and actually work in the football area and there are just tons of little kids running around wanting to play but it just seems that after a certain age the interest in football dwindles and more popular sports such as american football and baseball become priority. Every great once in a while I will see some kid wearing a soccer jersey but literally the only two teams I've seen are the rags or barc. Actually just today I saw a high school kid wearing a soccer shirt from his local school that is the blue devils and the logo was the rags just blue. It probably pissed me off more than it should but it still bugged me.

Another point I believe is that once someone does start seriously getting into major football clubs the mls is a good start but just doesn't cut it. One big help with bringing the PL to america is the FOX Soccer channel. They focus alot on the PL and show most games or at least highlights pretty often. Also with some of the teams touring the US for their per-season it seems to draw good crowds and helps just promote the game.
