But signing a 30 year old £25 mil CROCKs isn't the way to go either. At a pinch, a signing like that that would have been acceptable this season as a one off, last throw of the dice, but clearly there was no real enthusiasm for it (or for DeRossi) from the 'powers that be'.
They know that phase 1 is over, & it's important that we now bring through some of the young players, to prove we are the right club to sign for. At the same time, all the players young & old who are taking money out of the club but unlikely to figure in the 1st team need to go & be replaced with genuine talent, young & older. Balotelli for instance needs to go if he doesn't contribute this season.
I think we'll make 1 perhaps 2 big signings & the rest will be purely signed on potential.

We don't need conjecture to wonder what happens to strong teams with a good youth setup who don't invest
