it's actually not that interesting.
I find the analytics surrounding football to be really archaic and primitive. Given the nature of this game, and the tools and technology people should be able to give me stats that show WHY Garreth fucking Barry is one of the most important players on a team rather than bullshit stats about Howard Webbs pens. I think that's all very amateur-ish, and i'm looking for Ph.D. level analysis that actually can draw some insights around where players are geographically on a pitch at any given time. Does anyone know about firms doing that type of analysis?

Quite a few stats firms (such as squawka) do 'heat maps' showing where players spent their time during the match, very interesting actually - and I think firms in football are slowly starting to catch up to the US in terms of useful information but there's still some way to go.
