Nastasic has had a poor season. Falling asleep for the CSKA goal, ball watching for West Ham's goal, doing his best to give a penalty away against Everton, getting torn apart for Bayern's 3rd goal, and just an all-round horrible display against Villa. That's just the last 5 games.
If we gave a run of games to Kompany and Lescott, we would be significantly stronger at the back than any other possible partnership we could put out. If Kompany's out, then Richards should partner Lescott.
The defense were ball watching against cska and whu. He didn't get torn by Robben, he positioned himself to prevent Robben shooting with his left ( and best foot). Unfortunately Robben didn't fluff his shot this time with his right peg like he normally does.
Yes, the defence was ball watching against CSKA and West Ham. I'm not saying others weren't guilty but you can't overlook Nastasic's errors, which have been frequent all season.
We already know Garcia is shite, and it's been discussed to death. Zab was ball watching too on Wednesday, but generally his level of performance is high so he's not a major concern.
I just don't understand why Nastasic gets a free ride from so many people.
Because they spent 2 seasons slaughtering Lescott for every slight miskick & demandng first Savic & now Nastasic play instead & now have to stick with it ?
I'm actually quite pleased with what I see in Nastasic (apart from the goal v CSKA which was mainly his fault due to halfarsedness).
I think his biggest weakness was not getting involved in doing any defending. It's easy to hold your position & look cool, let others get pulled out to impossible situations & make cunts of themselves whilst you just clean up. Some daft twats on here admire that. Samir Nasri could do that job; centre backs are supposed to defend.
Souness mentioned how, when Lescott plays, the ball is like a magnet to him; he always seems to be involved. That's because he puts himself on the line all the time & tries to stop the oppo from scoring. It means that sometimes he is going to look a right tool when he gets it wrong. Nastasic, this season, is often trying to do the same, & therefore having to defend rather than combing his hair watching someone else do it. He is therefore making plenty of mistakes, but he is also learning to defend & getting tougher.
If the mistakes drop down to a reasonable percentage, then he will become as good as Lescott at defending. If not, he will be 2nd fiddle to a new signing then eventually sold.
Whatever, he isn't as good as Lescott now, but Lescott isn't as good as Lescott anymore; he's nervous because two managers have put him on trial every game he plays. He's still currently a better defender than Nasti or Garcia though.
We had the best cb pairing possibly in Europe with Vinny & JL. Put that pair in Bayern's team, with the whole team defending in front of them like they do, & they would be even better, not worse. All the crap about passing from the back etc; Bayern would just do that with those two in the team & not miss a fucking beat; it's all bullshit.
JL has no future at City & he knows it. He is nothing more than a short term option.
We need to buy a centre back.
