We are already a "force" in the league and in europe.

And if we "figure out the defending bit" we would potentially be the greatest team of all time?

Obviously I'm being tongue in cheek a bit here, my point being that we will probably never have both sorted on a consistent basis because it is extremely rare.

We will lose and we will draw. We will concede goals. All of these things are "typical".

What a time to be a city fan.

Don't think we'll ever "figure out the defending bit" because, under Pellegrini, we're obviously set up to attack and score goals and I think we've all got to accept that, under these circumstances, we'll always be likely to concede a few.

We might get a new centre-back in January or the summer, but it might not necessarily make a great deal of difference overall as to how effective we will be at defending because, this season we've become once again, in a nostalgically romantic sense, the Great Adventurers.

This season is reminding me of the 1967/68 season when we attacked sides from the off and just swept them away with ferocious style and flair. In the following seasons after that title win, we tried to consolidate and become 'more rounded' in our play, as well as defensively tighter and we seemed to lose a little of the attacking fluidity because of that (this process developed when we started playing Tony Towers - originally a full-back - as a holding midfield player). We were still a great side in the 1970s, but we were organically different from the 'raw product' in 1967/68.

So far this season, it's starting to feel like those vintage days with the difference being that the football we are now playing is on a totally different planet, to what it was then.

It's great to feel as though, once again, we are the adventurous side we all dream about. If we concede a few 'unnecessary' goals along the way then so be it and perhaps in any future transfer dealings, we should be looking to further strengthen our attacking talents, rather than scrubbing around for any questionable(??) defenders.

I don't know if folks have picked up on it, (or are interested) but Pellegrini has used a phrase more than once this week, to describe his plan for City's tactics & how he will not be changing the way we work; 'play like a big team'.

Of course there have been 'big teams' who are boring as fuck, but he means that Real Madrid, Barca etc, don't change the way they play because they are away from home or against top opposition, they think it is their job to be simply better than the opposition & they set out to prove it. Doesn't always work of course, but it has worked well enough.

I got a little tingle of the spine when he said it. He believes we can be so good, we play our game, v anyone, & we win.

We just did exactly that, & scored 6 v the table toppers.

Pellegrini is becoming more and more the manager i'd hoped he be when his appointment was annouced.

1: Plays attacking football home and away
2: Uses the width of the pitch, something i felt lacking last season
3: Doesn't give a fuck at press conferences and appears cool, calm and collected. Nothing fazes him. Even the fallout on Tuesday re the 4th goal. Just shrugged it off and basically said "we've just won at Bayern. This is good enough"
4: More often than not plays a settled offensive line up. I know the defence has been chopped and changed but injury has played its part there.
5: How good is Nasri this season
6: How good have we been in Europe this season
7: After scoring 2 or 3 goals we are not sitting back and coasting. We want 5 or 6 and are scoring goals like thete's no tomorrow
8: The blueprint for how we play is being followed at all levels of the club thus ensuring continuity/success in future

I know there are areas for improvement but i think they are being improved. I can't think of a position or a part of the club that has regressed under his tutelage.

Very very satisfied

His time last year we were second in the table with nine wins, six draws and one loss =33 points. One point and one position better than now. After that "poor" start we went into a run of six wins and a loss in following seven games leading to new year.

I'm fully enjoying the ride but once again you are reinventing history.

My rags mates were a always worried what would happen if another manager got hold of this team and let the shackles off. I guess they were right about being worried. Some unbelievable play from us. Get the defending bit right and the away form and we will be very hard to catch.

Great post.

I loved Mancini and was gutted when he left, and I'll always love him and be extremely grateful to him for everything that happened since he took over. I wonder whether Pelligrini would have done what he was able to do dragging us up from CL outsiders to PL champions (he probably could have), but Pelligrini seems to be the right choice for taking a top team and moving them up a gear. There is no ceiling to what we can achieve with him in charge and long may it continue.

On the 15th last year, we had won ten:

Southampton H, QPR H, Fulham A, Sunderland H, WBA H, Swansea H, Spurs H, Villa H, Wigan A, Newcastle A.

We had been outplayed by Arsenal & even at times by Moyes' Everton during draws, on our own pitch, & lost to Utd.

We had been absolutely dumped out of the Champions League & the League Cup.

We beat Reading 1-0

Then at Christmas, we lost to Sunderland, effectively ending the contest for the league, as there were only two teams contesting it & the rags had already played Chelsea Liverpool City & Everton away from home, so were unlikely to lose more than us for the remainder of the season.

The run you mention involved a great win at Arsenal, the first decent side we had actually beaten since the start of the season, but the other wins were Norwich A, Stoke H, Fulham H, then we drew at QPR, drew home to Liverpool & lost at Southampton. So either side of that 4 game 'run' we actually slipped firther behind the rags, rather than getting closer.

There is much more competition this season. Last season was a stroll but only one team did the strolling, & even they were shit.

Sticking on satisfied. Exhilarating though the ride is it is impossible to add the "very" until we put together a run of decent games away from home. If our points average away from home gets to the point we need to be champions (around 1.7) then I will upgrade (or if we win a trophy). We do have less points than after this many games last year, we are lucky that nobody has got clear of us this time. Hopeful that Pellegrini will be the most successful clown since Chaplin :)

Anyway, great football with just a tinge of dissatisfaction with regard to our goals against.

If we keep up our current form, winning at home and averaging 2 points per game away, I reckon we'll be top by the New Year and gradually move away from the pack. This is the period where the teams with the lesser squads begin to struggle and the Christmas period finds them out. They may come strong come February but it will be too late by then. We'll be even stronger.

I don't agree with that at all.

Those that are fully behind the team and Manager and join in the debates win, lose or draw hold city closer to their heart than any agenda.

Of course you gloat when you win. Who in their right mind would gloat when we lose...

I've been very satisfied since a while back and I see no reason to change it. In fact, if there was an option to move my satisfaction even further up at this point I'd do it.I've come to terms that we will leak a bit defensively and there will be times that I will wonder why I'm seeing Cityplayers defend like nine years olds. Eeez normal under this guy and it's the price we pay for fantastic football. Mega satisfied.

To relate to NQDP's thread, I love a good old fashioned, disciplined 1-0 win, catenaccio style and all that. But this... last team I saw play this good, and I'm not saying we are as good as them (yet), was Barcelona in 08-09.
"I used to be 6 foot 2 with curly hair, look what it's done to me"

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."
