Is It Important To Win A Trophy?

Postby Beefymcfc » Sat Jan 04, 2014 2:30 am

Been on the road across to the continent today and just got a glance of Pellers interview. SSN portrayed that Pellers stated that we have to win something this season, is this really the case?

BTW, Pellers never stated this but it carries on the pretext that it is ours to lose. How the fuck is it ours to lose, we're not even top!?

Do we have to win something or just come close? I think we should win something but (apart from the league) it's down to a one off.

I think he's under no illusions about the expectations that are appropriate from the owners from an investment like they made in the summer. £100m of talent added to a squad that finished 2nd and runners up in the premier domestic competition.

It's not a huge leap from there to expect to win at least one of those this season along with an improved champions league showing.

Harking back to the 5 trophies in 5 years thing, it seems there is an expectation of some form of silverware each season from now on which I think is a fair request from the owners when we have by far the best squad on paper in the league.

Don't feel the question is answered by the poll responses. Yes, I think we SHOULD, however I don't think it's IMPORTANT we do so.. In my eyes at least. I feel it comes down to circumstance, especially in Cups (more emphasis on Domestic after Arsenal were beat by Brentford?). Given the current quality of the league competition I think it's fair to say that if a team of equal investment or thereabouts is just as good as ours and the results state it, then second is not bad at all. Silverware is for those who deserve it, and earn it.

Its like asking "Is the deed important on a date or just having a good time"

We have a good thing going on, so no harm done if we have to wait a bit, but we all know why we are in the game

Sort of agree with you about deserving it and earning it. But by the same token if I had bought a new Ferrari and an ageing scrap bucket (eg the rags) beat me to the chequered flag, I'd be pretty well fucked off with my mechanic for the way he prepared my car for the race, as all other things being equal (drivers etc), my car should have won the race based on the gap in quality.

I use this example as in the case of pellegrini, he is the driver, and we are paying him to bring his quality to bear to outperform the other drivers - it's particularly critical that he does given that he has the best car - now at the moment he has the motherfucker purring, so all is good.

If the cunt breaks down a lap from the end in every race though, questions will be asked.

For me from now on until investment levels drop consistently to the levels of other clubs, any city manager will have a heavy burden of expectation upon them, not just for a trophy, but the league title and European progression.

We absolutely should win at least something this season, as we should have done last season too. Its likely we are going to meet the rags in the league cup final too, and I'd be gutted if we didn't win that. Actually I feel it would be really vitally important we didn't lose that, as if Moyes ends up with a trophy this year after otherwise doing so badly would be hard to take.

God I hate them.

Anyway, if we did somehow miss out on everything this year I wouldn't be calling to get rid of Pelligrini, I think its very important we stick with him. But for sure it would be a big disappointment if we don't win anything this year.

As has been said we should've won the FA Cup last year and now we know why they played like a bunch of cunts.

Course we have to win something this year - something as well as the Carling Cup.

It is important to win the League Cup now. Because not to means we either wasted a great chance v West Ham or managed to lose to an inferior filth team.
But I think the style of play, the good feeling that is generating in football and the improved atmosphere, are something that buys Audrey plenty of time.

After what happened in last seasons FA cup final and with the quality of opposition left in the Capital one cup, there can be no excuses. It's ours to lose more so than the league. I've still only seen us win 3 trophies in nearly 40 years of supporting City so it's all new to me and I want more.

I'll go with that.

I'd be happy with the league cup - anything else this season a bonus, that's not to say we aren't capable of winning more as we clearly are. Pellers has already achieved one of the targets of course - knock out phase of champs league.

I also do not think the available options covers the spread of views.

My view(s) would be:

I do not think that Pellers 'HAS' to win a trophy - as in his job is under threat without one

I do not think that he will lose the support of the (vast Majority) of fans if we fail to lift a trophy

What is of MASSIVE importance though is that he (the team) take each trophy very seriously - we are (hopefully the vast majority) not like either the arrogant scum fuckers that have been demeaning the cups for years or the PL hangers on whose trophy is survival so fuck the cups. For those of use that have been around a long time - a Wembley trip is a major day out

So long as we do not get arrogant and treat any trophy with a lack of respect I will be happy - the good news is that Pellers seems to have entirely the right attitude and he seems to be getting the players to also have the right attitude

To me way of thinking we're in a transitional season where we've introduced a new manager and coaching staff, a fair number of new players, a new ethos of uber-attacking football going forward and a change from zonal to man to man marking in defence.
We have no right to be doing as well as we are so far but Pellegrini has a way of working that seems to get the best out of players (Nasri as 1 example) and I feel that we've actually over-achieved in the first half of this season under the circumstances.
Silverware is important to all teams but I believe that any trophy this season will be a welcome bonus but one that is actually more achievable than planning would have allowed for virtue of our better than could be reasonably expected start.
Beyond the above, I think that it is important that we win a trophy next season when our squad has had a season to bed in together.
If we had De Gea and the rags had Hart, we'd be top with a 9 point lead and they'd be in 12th place - that's the difference between a 'good' keeper and a 'top class' keeper - 12 places - think about it.

It is massively important to win trophies. The sheikh hasn't invested his money to finish 2nd. We are well placed for a league cup/premier league double. With the current crop of players this should be a very realistic aim. The target is 5 trophies in 5 years.

As for winning trophies, I think we should be expected to win one this season. The League Cup thing seems to be our best bet but I'd be disappointed if we didn't win the league (but not shocked). Winning a trophy 'the Pellegrini way' will cement his position within the club and can't come soon enough for me.

The option of sweeping all before us is a little strange. Very few sides have swept all before them. We Still have many defensive issues, so sweeping all before us is a non runner.
Win the league and a cup would be fantastic achievement. Don't think we can better that.

We were so poor in the PL game v Wigan (& Bob especially) that I took some time away from the board as my overwhelming gut feeling was that we were in an absolute mess & would lose the final & that Bob had totally lost it as manager, so I thought I'd just say fuck all & hope I was wrong, rather than argue that opinion.

None of the options quite cover it for me, as I agree totally with those who say it's a transitional period but I do think we should win at least one trophy & I do think that's important. I think we have underperformed if we don't win the league tbh, we are miles better than everyone else, but I also think that it's a sacrifice worth putting up with short term because the Count is putting together something special.

If in the end, he fails to win trophies, he will pay the price, but the picture he leaves behind will be mostly perfected & just waiting for someone to take over & put the final touches to an absolute masterpiece.

I think it's obvious to anyone that we are becoming something that others in this country can only look at with their mouths open, & if things go wrong this season, The Count will be allowed this as a warm up for next season; when he will be judged mainly on results.

I still think we will be in transition then tbh, I recon we haven't finished with the style/player changes yet & will move on again, but we will still require the title at least once to justify the outlay, whatever else happens.
