Abramovitch

Abramovitch

Postby Mikhail Chigorin » Mon Mar 17, 2014 10:09 pm

Now that Russia has recognised the independence of the Crimean peninsula from the rest of the Ukraine and, in response, the USA, together with the EU, have announced that they will issue sanctions and freeze the assets of, amongst others, prominent Russian politicians and business-people, has anyone heard anything which might suggest that Abramovic is included in this targeted group ??

If Abramovic is, in fact, included, the prospects for Chelsea might become interestingly problematic.

And thats where he could hit a sticky wicket because they can only target money held in US or EU accounts. I would imagine he'd only be targeted if he's seen as supporting the highly democratic regime they have over there (Putin) but his business is/was gas wasn't it so he'd surly be in bed with him somewhere down the line?

This is where I'm interested in it - which countries is his gas pipelined through?

As one of my friends pointed out on Facebook the other day:
I know it's different and this is melodramatic, but with what is happening in Crimea today with the referendum and all the potential for it to escalate, you start to get a bit of an idea of the fear that existed during the Cold War... only luckily now the guys with the red button in Moscow probably have second homes here in London that they don't want getting irradiated.

I'd say there is a reasonable chance that he is on the hit list at some point. As much as he has done nothing to offend me, I highly doubt much goes on in Russia without him having a hand in it

Abramovich was the first person to originally recommend to Yeltsin that Vladimir Putin be his successor as the Russian president. When Putin formed his first cabinet as Prime Minister in 1999, Abramovich interviewed each of the candidates for cabinet positions before they were approved. Subsequently Abramovich would remain one of Putin's closest confidants. In 2007 Putin consulted in meetings with Abramovich on the question of who should be his successor as president - Medvedev was personally recommended by Abramovich

Let's get a rumour going anyway, along with the Mourinho to Utd one.

This rumour could also include leaving Chelsea in debt, ffp, Hazard being concerned, & wanting to come to City.

He's probably a fair way off being a target of sanctions but he will definitely be concerned about his situation which may affect his behaviour. Step in Ted Bates as Chelsea's saviour surely.

What a great idea.

Everyone knows about Mourinho and his penchant for 'mind games', but this one would exceed any that our Portuguese pedant might dream up.

If only some 'journalist' could come across this idea and publicise it, we could all have a chuckle, or two, at Chelsea's expense.

There will no sanctions on wealthy Russians outside Russia. Londons economy would come to a grinding hault for starters.

We really do not want to be putting sanctions on Russia, it will hurt us alot more than it will hurt them,

David 'I'm a tough guy' Cameron likes to talk big and, apart from bombing Libya, when push comes to shove he'll scuttle away like a demented rat, in order to not let his friends in the City be out of pocket in any way.

Heaven forfend that London is ever adversely affected.

I also liked that he didnt accepted the legitimacy of the Crimea referendum, despite praising the Falkland Islands one last year, which was about as official as a school debate. He needs to keep his mouth shut on this one as I know for a fact that the UK Govt at least have considereded to anex Faslane in the event of a Yes vote in Scotland. Russia is looking after its military interests just as the rUK or any other nation that considers itself a military power would.

Don't you mean WHEN Scotland votes Yes ??

With regard to Tory Boy Cameron, I'm surprised he hasn't threatened to 'send a gunboat' to the Crimea.

It would be good to know where these gas lines are and how twitchy those countries start to become as the USSR oops i mean Russia begin to close the curtain again.

So when I asked 'in bed' in truth they're shacked up and emptying each other sacks!

I would say then that he is certainly in the catchment criteria - depends how serious they want to take this. I wonder if he's had a letter to say 'your next or start to have a word with your pal'?

Also the ones locked down by the EU haven't been named so maybe he's already been hit?

As far as I'm aware, some of the gas pipelines run through parts of the Ukraine and Byelorussia (sorry, Belarus) and into Poland and the Russian Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad (formerly the northern portion of East Prussia), for tanker export to Western Europe and beyond.

Don't know if the pipelines extend into Germany, or not.

I think as Ross has said, the ones who have been done so far are ones already in Russia / Crimea, who have assets outside of their home jurisdiction. But it already starts to look silly when a number of those on the list have come forward and said they don't see what all the fuss is about, as they don't have assets in US or Europe.

Reality with all this though is the stakes are incredibly high, so we will not learn what the truth of what is going on for a good few decades as neither side will be playing clean right now.
