This would allow us to off-load Sagna and, if necessary at any time, Milner could also fill in at left back if there was an emergency.

I like you. However, your idea is a shit one.
Cheers

Agree with MC. He is verstile enough. Not as a regular, but as a makeshift. Same as he has done up front as a false 9 in the 4-6-0 formation. Every squad needs a Milner or two. A guy who can fill in and do a job with little disruption. The rags had P Neville and O'Shea. Neither great players but did a good job when asked. Milner is better than both of those by the way

My own thought was that if Milner were to stay and we were to buy a number of new midfielders in the summer, his chances of first team opportunities would then be even more seriously and adversely affected.
If, however, he was slotted in at right back, I feel he could do the PabZab overlapping role better than most and his game-time chances would be helped by him re-inventing himself.
If we ever went to a system of three centre-backs and genuine wing backs, he could be ideal in that scenario.

Not a David Silva but has generally done a good job for us and we will miss his effort and work rate. Guess he must be thinking that he's won the league, league cup and fa cup and now wants to be the main man in his favoured centre mid role.

I still can't see Milner being a guaranteed starter at either Liverpool or Arsenal so I remain confused at why he should want to leave.

I have never seen a quote like that before.
Milner is a top pro and I wish the rest of football had his attitude to his job and life outside of football. Cannot fault him, wherever he goes, I wish him good luck unless in direct competition with us. The move away from us for a lesser team is very puzzling, there can only be 1 reason and thats a promise to play him central. We all know he covets that position and he has played well in that area on a few occasions, but he is far more effective out wide. I do think that with Gerrard and Lampard gone, if he gets a regular Centre mid role elsewhere, he will be a starter there for England as well.
