If Milner were to stay with ourselves, I wouldn't mind seeing him converted to a right back, particularly if PabZab continues to show some signs of starting to be in decline.

This would allow us to off-load Sagna and, if necessary at any time, Milner could also fill in at left back if there was an emergency.

Agree with MC. He is verstile enough. Not as a regular, but as a makeshift. Same as he has done up front as a false 9 in the 4-6-0 formation. Every squad needs a Milner or two. A guy who can fill in and do a job with little disruption. The rags had P Neville and O'Shea. Neither great players but did a good job when asked. Milner is better than both of those by the way

My own thought was that if Milner were to stay and we were to buy a number of new midfielders in the summer, his chances of first team opportunities would then be even more seriously and adversely affected.

If, however, he was slotted in at right back, I feel he could do the PabZab overlapping role better than most and his game-time chances would be helped by him re-inventing himself.

If we ever went to a system of three centre-backs and genuine wing backs, he could be ideal in that scenario.

Though if FFP is relaxed enough that money is no object again we will surely just get a younger guy or maybe even promote Maffeo sooner than planned. Dont think we will go three at the back anytime soon though. Certainly not under Pellegrini. Pep maybe but that is likely to be at least a year away

BBC reporting Milner to Liverpool to be sorted this week. Has seemed I evitable he is going to go and I will be disappointed if and when he does depart. Not a David Silva but has generally done a good job for us and we will miss his effort and work rate. Guess he must be thinking that he's won the league, league cup and fa cup and now wants to be the main man in his favoured centre mid role.

I still can't see Milner being a guaranteed starter at either Liverpool or Arsenal so I remain confused at why he should want to leave.

Milner rates Milner as a worldly top player...................deluded.

Maybe Liverpool made him a promise, with Gerrard leaving, but there could be something else under the surface we do not know much about either. Maybe he doesn't really feel he fits with some players on the team, personality wise, who knows?

Our strange performances this season could tell many something may have been amiss for quite some time this year, and maybe he felt it as well. The team, manager and players have shown some resiliency at the end of the season, but maybe that's not enough to keep him. Maybe James feels he's won everything in England, not winning the Champions League with us probably -- if that matters -- and better to feel like a player at this point in his career who is seen as amongst the best on the team, where when the name of the club comes up -- you are the what's pictured in folks' minds. With us, he's more than a few players down on the 'quality' list. Dellusional or not maybe he's tired of being the best squad-like player, who gets a lot of games, and fans and the manager love. In other words, maybe he wants an identity change to show he can be an important player that can lift other clubs to enhance his reputation.

Either way I will miss him and respect what he has done for us.

money freed up to buy a quality midfielder, Isco rather than pogba for me, but not seen much of pogba would like to get rid of sagna aswell, we should never have brought him in at his age.

Liverpool? What a dick head!! Basically he's used us to actually win things in what would otherwise have been a trophy-less career. Left a sour taste for me.

Bodgers will have us Spewing, Milner will be Spewing in Jan when his season is over and the hard graft for no reward kicks in..... idiot. What does irk me is how we cannot do an in-house deal with mind blowing money for a bang average player. Seems strange this could not get done in spite of the praise the respect and the Dough on offer.

I have never seen a quote like that before.

Milner is a top pro and I wish the rest of football had his attitude to his job and life outside of football. Cannot fault him, wherever he goes, I wish him good luck unless in direct competition with us. The move away from us for a lesser team is very puzzling, there can only be 1 reason and thats a promise to play him central. We all know he covets that position and he has played well in that area on a few occasions, but he is far more effective out wide. I do think that with Gerrard and Lampard gone, if he gets a regular Centre mid role elsewhere, he will be a starter there for England as well.

Dont agree WW. Whether he likes it or not his best position is now on the flanks - whenever he's played centre mid for us he's been piss poor to be honest. Looks like a career suicide move to me - then again it could be all shit and he'll re-sign any minute.

Milner was being talked about by such as Terry Venables & Peter Taylor as possibly becoming England's best player at centre mid, before he signed for City.

He hasn't been great when we have played him there but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be, if he played 30 games there.
