We just got 20+ inches in baltimore. No one drove while it was snowing ... A day after it stopped snowing the roads were completely fine. Wet, but no ice no snow. Because salt and "grit" were put down beforehand ... not complicated.

And as far as I've seen from forecasts ... the temp over there is just at the freezing point, that is not cold enough by far to negate the use of salt. If you drove around in a truck and shoveled salt off the back it would have dramatically lessened the danger presented from Ice and 12'' of snow.

Forecast for last night was -8, it ended up being -15, so forecasts aren't everything! It was -10 when I went out this morning, and -9 most of the day. It's predicted for -9 tonight, but we'll see what it actually is, I guarantee it'll be lower!

As Haz has said it was way below freezing here and Halite (salt rock) begins to lost its effectiveness rapidly past -5c

Completely agree about not having stock piles of grit as well - you can imagine the same people moaning about the cost to the taxpayer. Unfortunately its just freak weather that we're going to have to deal with even if it means calling off a couple of football games.

Just because one or two football games are called off doesn't mean the world is going to end.

C'mon lads. What the f**k is up with the brittish people not copying with a little snow. Pitches are clear but games are pp due to "the soroding aereas". I've been shovling 5 foot snow tonight enjoying Bodd's on Can and it's refreshing.(Snow and Bod's)
If Monday night is called of I'm utterly dissapointed.

Rain turning to ice is the business in my neck of the world, and gravel and salt are the cure.

P.S. You have got to be kidding me with the, 'buying too much salt' line.

I'm not sure if you Brits realize this or not, but -

Sand and salt don't go bad. If you have too much one year, you just leave it stockpiled and it'll still be good the next year. I swear. I've got a bucket of sand right now to put on any ice that may form on my steps. It won't go bad, it has an indefinite shelflife.

Now, the machinery needed to sand and salt the roads is a different issue, and probably valid.

Also, I realize again that it wouldn't be needed that often, but Calcium Chloride melts ice to -25 F. There are icemelts available that melt ice better than regular rocksalt. I can't imagine a whole town being shut down by snow in places where they normally get lots of snow.

But I don't get calling off a match on Monday because it snowed the middle of the previous week. I've been to sporting events where it snowed over a foot that day. Of course, it was in areas where they are prepared for it. But if the pitch is fine, lets get on with it.

Winter tyres? Fuck that, What's the point buying them when we haven't had weather like this for over 30 years? Less money to spend on beer.

Buy salt to clear your own path? Fuck that, it doesn't work below a certain temperature anyway and that'll also mean less money to spend on beer.

Northern lassess dress sensibly? Fuck that, Northern lads get turned on by the pert nipples and cornbeef legs look. Plus they always fall for the ''Cold love? ere, let me buy you an hot blob'' chat-up line in Yates's!! ;-) I can afford em because i didn't waste my money on winter tyres & salt.

Yeah, thats what the councils are doing. They're running out of halite, so are mixing it or even replacing it with sand to stretch it further. Anything to keep the bean counters happy!

The sad thing is, you're right. But the fact is us Brits complain too much! Politicians are genuinely to gutless to increase the budgets at the best of times, let alone in this recession. They care more about their big salaries and expenses than doing some good. Christ, I hate politicians.

Rant over!

Depends how big your path is! No-one will sell sacks of rock salt to we mere mortals anymore, so just bought 4 750g packets of table salt from ASDA at 32p each. Just enough to stop the dogs falling over every time they go out the back. That's only half a pint in this neck of the woods, though nearer a pint in Manchester I grant you!

I'll be buggered when the snow comes back to the South Sunday & Monday though!
