Enjoy while it lasts?

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Enjoy while it lasts?

Postby Moonchesteri » Fri Jan 08, 2016 8:59 am

Have you considered that the quality of players both in the world and at City may be so high that it takes decades before we see similar again?

Pele...Maradona...Messi. He is up there with the best of the best. Once in a generation type of player. There's always great footballers but only very few rise to these heights.

Silva. Yaya Toure. Aguero. Kompany. Hart. Nasri. Dzeko. De Jong. Barry. Balotelli. Fred1. Kola. Zabba. KDB etc etc. The quality we've seen at City in recent years is incredible when you think about it.

Blue moon has risen and we are now dining at the big boys table. But even great teams have had periods when they had great teams even by their standards.
Obviously you would think that we are going places with the owners we have, with the CFA, maybe Pep coming etc and I cant wait what the future holds for us..

And while the team are making it difficult to enjoy the football (esp.away)... Have you considered that the City we will see in the coming years may not actually be as good? We may be a better team but Silva etc may be the next Colin Bell we tell stories of to our kids and grandkids.

typical city fan ;-)

I am very appreciative mate, if sometimes I have to try and be less of a twat due to high expectations when the amazing players we have underperform on a regular basis.

I bet that some Barca fans moan about Messi.

They'd be dicks for doing so, but still.

Just wait until we have half a team of superstars bought in and half a team of home grown superstars we developed all playing a free flowing attacking way.

It's going to be glorious.

I know I probably shouldn't think this way but I think our team in the next 5 years will be better than our team of recent years.

Why not?

When you consider all things that are in place for the on and off field development for this club, surely that is reasonable to think that way?
It may not happen though, hence this thread.

After decades of dire tribe we've had to put up with, i personally am appreciative of what we have now in footballing terms and find it hard to get pissed off even with the way are playing currently. I have learnt to disconnect any association to the "cost of our team" or any monetary terms of the club that makes me demand more because of who we the club have become.

What frustrates me is not what we paid for player but how they are letting themselves down as we know as well as they do they can player better. The days where they all (or most) click and we see breath taking passages of play.

For me what i enjoy most above all else was epitomised in the 13/14 season when we were scoring for fun & every time we took possession of the ball you were on the edge of your seat in anticipation of the next goal you just knew was coming, laughing out load at how good we are playing.

I have no doubt that we will be that good again and even better with future players, in the meantime i refuse to get wound up at that we aren't playing currently, yes it's frustrating but we are still technically competing on 4 fronts, riding 3 points from the top of the league. I believe that we are currently experiencing a transitional period with combination of factors including injuries/aging players/others not yet quite up to speed with the prem/managerial rumours.

Personally i couldn't give a flying fuck about Pep coming in, unlike some i refuse to pin my hopes on some bald messiah to the point that it makes me hate the Count, IF he comes and he provides me with entertaining breath taking football resulting in a shed load of goals then i will be glad, but if we turn into a boring 1-0 every week, then he can fuck off and take any silverware he wins with him.

In general terms answering the OP's question on a broader prospect, i doubt we will have to wait too long to see the next Pele, Maradona, Messi, it will be sooner than you think, only this time City are and will be in a position to attract such a player to play for us.

Occasionally it is nice to be able to still say 'Typical City'.....

Great post, but there was no need to mention bald ;-)

I am so old-school that I am still waiting for the extra point this season to make us safe from relegation.

Whether the club can reach its full potential is open to debate but we have only scratched the surface and there are no signs of the juggernaut from stopping.

Excellent post, these parts in particular are what I feel. And probably the best play on words I've ever seen here if it was intentional (I'm assuming it was!)

If everybody is fit and playing to their potential we have the best squad this club has ever seen , but I know it does not always work like that.

This is a transition season ( quite frankly is a bit hard to take after our phenomenal recent success and start to the season) but I have never questioned our owners.

I do not think we will win anything this season , but it is all about the long term plan

Pep will bring major changes and a different style.

Looking forward to it.

Obviously the general standard will keep getting better just as it has done since the days of Maradona but that's not the point is it? You can never really compare a player of 2015 to one who played in 1985...you could put Elano to any WC side in 1986 as he'd be a superstar. But who will remember Elano by 2050?
even compared to the current vastly improved levels of football it does look like Messi is once in a generation kind of player doesn't it? Something truly special. Those players don't grow on trees
