The negative spin is that signing Vieira might have cost us even more (ignoring that work permit issues are the real reason we couldn't get him).

What that really speaks to is an ignorance as to how transfers/work permits really work, so I'd guess it's Cooke's fault.

I know what youre saying but how many had heard of him before last week? it would have been a buzz among just City fans really because we always(well nearly always) view new signings with optimism.Perhaps they were confident with an appeal, perhaps they didnt realise it was 5pm deadline. Perhaps they had a fag break at the wrong time. Who knows. SOMEONE should have raised the issue. HE WONT PASS WORK PERMIT REGS. Perhaps Gago was the first choice and we had to move swiftly when Madrid started playing cloak and dagger, again. I don't know. I don't think the Sheik would have heard of him either, but if he has, I'll get the missus to fill up the car again tomorrow sir, I promise.

Apparently the PM of Kenya got Mariga the work permit but it was too late... this begs the question who the fuck is responsible for dragging this out to the last day of the transfer window?

If this had happened last week there would not have been any issues due to the intervention of the Kenyan PM.

did you take a look at the story on the right about "arry" wanting to take him to pompey a couple of years ago but couldn't get a work permit iether i wonder if chris nield could tell us who is the fcuker responsible for this fcuk up, leaving it to the last minute

FFS,if he is wicked at Inter we will just go and sign him in the summer.

Good luck doing that, Inter have no need to sell their players for financial reasons as they are backed by Moratti who can just turn and get some money from the family oil company, so if he's a success there, there will be no chance of getting him. It would be easier to get Muntari if Mariga is a success, that is one player they might be willing to sell.

The lad said it was his dream to play in the English Premier League.

So.......................

If a player wants to leave, they leave, granted it would cost City a fortune if he does well.

But like i said, a transfer request, a bump in wages, head turned and an offer from City, bobs your uncle.

Sorry to be so frank but it happens all the time nowadays,Adam Johnson anyone?

Thing is though we are talking about a player a lot of us have never seen play. OK thats irrelevant because Mancini calls it, but would City sanction a hugely inflated fee for a player they could have had for what, £7m, when the selling club is minted as well and would be more inclined to play a silly cat and mouse game that sidetracks the pre-season? and then you still have to justify the work permit, Kenyan PM's letter and all? Nah...we let Barca change the guard, and go for Yaya.

Adam Johnson wasn't playing for Inter though. Maybe I'm a bit pessimist due to the dominance Inter have installed in Italy both on the pitch and on the transfer market, but I don't see it easy at all to take a player they want to keep from them. Better wages?Moratti will offer whatever we do, and nullify that point. Mourinho will tell him he has a great future at Inter, etc. and we may struggle to get the lad's attention.

The point im trying to make is that if a player wants to leave, they leave.
Fack Moratti and his family oil,if he has a desire to play premier league and City came in with an offer to take him which suited Inter and the player he would sign.

I'd seen him briefly and looked impressed but hadn't connected the name and the face initially. Name recognition wasn't all that high either with de Jong, Zabaleta, Kompany, Corluka...

It was a complicated enough deal. We can't know that it was our fault and not at one of the other ends, it's just a shame because -- in Bojinov -- we had rare leverage in the transfer deal.

And here is the real reason why the work permit was denied:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... l?ITO=1490

'Please allow McDonald Mariga to join Manchester City!' Kenya PM Ralia Odinga's desperate phone call to Gordon Brown

Kenya PM Minister Raila Odinga had tried to secure his country's star McDonald Mariga a £7million move to Manchester City by phoning Gordon Brown.

Midfielder Mariga, 20, was refused a work permit by a panel that included David Pleat and Dave Bassett and Inter Milan stepped in with a four-year deal.

Jose Mourinho said: 'He's a purchase for today and tomorrow but he can also fill the hole left by Patrick Vieira.'
McDonald Mariga

On call: The Kenya PM failed in his attempt to secure McDonald Mariga's City move

The £7million move City had been all but agreed, but the Kenya international's difficulty in securing a work permit put pay to the deal.

The 6ft 2in marauding midfielder would have provided a combative force at the heart of Roberto Mancini's midfield.

That's right. Look at Ibra - the most paid player in Europe and still he left for Barcelona, but thanks to him and the money we got from the transfer Inter practically rebuilt the team. :)
